As plus handicaps were mentioned on another thread, I thought a new thread was needed. My question is , when plus h/c amateur golfers are invited to play in major pro comps i.e. The Open.
Do they play off scratch for the amateur title, even though there might players who would normally get strokes from a lower plus h/c player. Say a plus 1 v a plus 4 ??.

They all play of scratch because it's a full scratch comp

The handicap only comes into use during handicap comps mate

If an amateur is invited to play in a pro tournament then he plays off scratch, the only exceptions I can think of are pro-ams when they would play off their handicaps.

ps....nobody gets 'invited' to play in the Open, it is a strict qualification process.

So they turn up on the day and say I've qualified I'm playing.

of course they play off scratch. they could win the open if they play good enough. they just wont win any prize money!

This happened at the Irish open amateur Shane Lowry won so prize money went to 2nd.
Didn't Justin Rose finish his amatuer career by finishing in the top 5 of the open? That's a big prize he couldn't claim!

Yeah a number of guys have done that ( or similar ) - Wood and Lewis in recent years

Well, you could try that and see what happens. Let me know how you get on ;)
Wasnt there some randon bloke years ago that keeped blagging himself onto top tour events and comps. He played off something stupid like 21. I'm sure he recently died.
