Played yesterday and today, A couple of my approach shots were slightly long and just caught the back fringe of the green but with it being quite wet the ball just plugged. What is the rule? because the ball is submerged into the ground with no way of making contact with the ball? Or is it just the same as it would be in a bunker?

Cheers

If it's on closely mown areas I believe the rule is different to being in the rough

You can either roll it out of the plug lie or pick and place and clean ?

I'm probably wrong, but I wasn't aware you could roll it out? Thought it had to be pick and place. Although, I guess rolling it could be classed the same as picking and placing?

Seen a few places have a local rule for rolling the ball out of its plugged lie but think that was for being in the rough

25-2. Embedded Ball A ball embedded in its own pitch-mark in the ground in any closely mown area through the green may be lifted, cleaned and dropped, without penalty, as near as possible to the spot where it lay but not nearer the hole. The ball when dropped must first strike a part of the coursethrough the green. "Closely mown area" means any area of the course, including paths through the rough, cut to fairway height or less.

In addition the club may be using the Winter Rule / Preferred Lies which allows a player to mark, lift and place his ball within 6" (normally) of the place where it lay.

Comments about the ball being 'rolled' to another position are absolutely wrong.

Ah ok. I still get confused by plugged ball rules, as do so many people I play with it seems. Would be a lot easier (IMO) to make it a RoG that a plugged ball in any part of the course can be picked and placed/dropped, just like on the tours. Would love to know if the rules gurus on here know the logic of why they wouldn't bring that in? (my guess is it goes against the "play as it lies" rule?)

Is it on the fairway? Are you still on winter rules, then mark position of ball lift and clean as per your local rule.
Is it in the rough, is a local rule in place? Proceed as per local rule. Never heard of rolling a ball out of the plugged lie before. If no local rule in place, play it as it lies.

Do the tours allow plugged balls in the rough to be pick and place ?

Who cares, it's to do with what the club has in place, not what the tour do.

The question was in response to someone mentioning the tour allowing players to pick and place - please look at the context the post was made before posting a reply.

I thought it was pick and drop? Which is how it is treated on closely mown areas currently, per rulefans post? Would be good to see all year round, pick and drop in all areas of course for an embedded ball.

Never knew they did that on tour

Yeah I agree it should be a rule of golf to allow and pick and drop for plugged balls.

It cost me a shot yesterday :(

Only around the fringe of the green, We are still in preferred lies in the fairway at our club.

I had been picking repairing and placing but I just wanted other peoples opinion and the correct ruling.

There is an approved Local Rule allowing a ball plugged in the rough to be marked, lifted and dropped (not placed or rolled), available to any club or competition committee to use when they thing conditions merit it.

The pro tours have it on their hard cards to make all competitions are consistent and save the poor pros having to read and remember the local rules for each completion.

Question rulefan. What would be the impact if this became a permanent rule of golf? Because if the rules didn't merit it, then no impact, and if it did merit it, not need for the committee to introduce the LR each time?

Closely mown (fairway) - Preferred Lies is 'Mark, lift, clean and place'
Through the Green (rough) - Embedded ball is 'Mark, lift, clean and drop'

Fully understand but my point is that getting others opinions can lead to all sorts of problems and it's down to the local rules that are n force at the club your playing at that matter.
Hence my point about the tour and rolling the ball around.
