Plugged ball on green upslope

Yesterday on the 18th par 3, hit a high shot with a 5 hybrid which pitched and plugged on the upslope between the lower and upper "flat" parts of the green. Retrieved ball , repaired pitch mark and attempted to place ball on the green. It wouldn't stay and just rolled down the slope. What should I have done?

Find the nearest place you can place your ball without it rolling...No nearer the hole.
