playing with Injury

Have had a bad back for a few weeks now and despite my better judgement i've played with the injury a few times and now made it worse. :(

Had a back spasm on monday and i'm now laid up for the foreseeable future and can barley walk at the moment let alone do anything else

Has anyone else every done this and played though injury even though you know its the wrong thing to do. :(

Do i just write of this season and try and recover as best i can?

Any other experience of bad backs in the past and what effect does it have on your game now?

Re: playing with Injury

I've had back problems since my early 20's,and i'm in my 40's now.My back constantly gives me problems, and i've had it go into spasm doing something as simple as leaning forward to brush my teeth!
Rest is not always the best thing though, and keeping active whilst its hurting can sometimes improve things, although obviously nothing too strenuous.
My back went into spasm 3 weeks ago,all i did was bend to pick a box of shoes up in a local shop.I was unable to move from the sofa untill the following morning, and in quite a lot of pain.I took Diclofenac (Voltarol),and wore my lumber brace for the next week, and made a point of not sitting still and doing nothing for too long, and going for a walk several times during the day.I was back at work 5 days later and swinging a club within the week.
I always spend at least 20 minutes warming up and stretching before playing, and i wear a cross training belt, just to help stabilise my lower back.A powakaddy is big help if you suffer with your back.
As daft as it sounds,i've played some of my best golf when my back is playing up.I tend to swing within myself, and not jump or lash at the ball, this more often than nots results in a smoother swing and tempo, and finding the middle of the club far more regularly.

Re: playing with Injury

I have been playing with had bad knee pain for months and am getting by on pain killers and, in extreme cases, anti inflamatorys! My surgical consultant reckon I'll need an arthroscopy and have had MRI scan to see what the damage is. Got to go back to the consultant in November so am hoping that any operation / recuperation will take place over the winter so I'll be back playing again in the spring! :D

Re: playing with Injury

I suffer from sciatica about 3 or 4 times a year. The initial wrench lays me up for 3 or 4 days but after that I can move about well enough to cope with day to day stuff. As for golf , no way in the first few days but after that its ok if its something i've already paid for otherwise I wont play for up to 2 weeks.

I've also bought one of those ball pick up devices that fits on the end of your putter. Saves a few bend downs a round and it all helps

Re: playing with Injury

I suffer with some mild back pain/stiffness every now and again. My doctor believe it or not, said to play and be as mobile as you can. I guess it depends on the type of injury.

If it hurts when you swing then obviously dont play, but if like me it doesn't hurt then probably OK to carry on.

Maybe introduce back stretches before and after you play?
