I had my first proper experience of playing with a forum yardage guy today. You know the kind, standing at the 150 marker saying "ooooh into the wind, probably a 9 iron". In my head I'm thinking "mate, I've been out driving you most of the day and even I'd be thinking 6 with this wind".

Wouldn't be a problem as if he wants to think it was a strong gust when he comes up 30 yards short AGAIN that's his problem, but every so often he'd casually mention what club he'd hit just as I'm lining my shot up and it's a good two clubs different. Saying it now it's so obvious that I should just ignore the guy and stick with my choice, but at the time it's in my head and I don't make a confident swing because I don't trust the club in my hand. Result, duffs and miss hits.

It's amazing what little things can put you off your game. Definitely an experience to learn from.

I played at the Belfry last year and got paired up with this right tit. He kept interfering with his yardages and in the end me and my playing partner kindly told him to carry on in front because he clearly knew the course so well and that were holding him up. On the 7 holes we played with him, he never had the honour. Shows how useful his GPS watch was.........

Switch off... Thats what i usually do..... I hate having to listen to players tell me what they hit into certain holes..... Or even ones that tell me what they are going to do before the hit the ball.... Usually its the complete opposite of what they call.....

I play my game and let everyone else worry about theirs....Usually i may not even complement them on a good shots... Because its just seems to feed the hunger they crave....

Similar guy in mixed match yesterday...blah, blah, blah and I just switch off and occasionally inwardly chuckle :-)

Wasn't sure whether to be flattered or offended when I birdied the 3rd and he said, in great surprise, "wow, you hit proper golf shots" and then suggested I try blades which he, of course, played!!

He sounds like a right gobshite..... Must have been painful playing with him.. :)

I usually say something pretty curt about not mattering what stick you use as long as it goes where you want it. "oops your nine iron is in the bunker....again. That'll be my 7 iron putting from 12 feet then". They tend to get the messgae. That or I just tell them to shut up

I always have a chuckle when in the clubhouse 'Mr Bighitter' informs the crowd that he hit the 5th green with a drive and 6 iron today.

Cough] Yes you did, you trickled to 3'' on the green and the pin was 25 yards on. 2.5 clubs short.

I don't mind conversing with someone about club selection and yardage after both shots have been hit and were walking to our respective ball.

Before hand is irrelevant and pointless IMO.

Our warehouse manager is one of the former. Claims to hit his 3 iron 202 yards. Now, I'll admit this is not beyond the realms of possibility, however, the gentleman in question is 60+, has very poor flexibility giving him, at best, half a back swing and plays every ball off his back foot..... You can see where this is going.

I played with him at our last works social and it was painful :(

I also played with a chap the year previous from another depot who, like the OP insisted on describing his shot, yardage and club while you were playing.

ON one occasion, after I played I got the

"What club did you take there?" remark,

To which I gave him an honest answer. His following remark was

"Wow, that's 3 clubs less than me!!"

To which my reply was

"Yes, but while I'm on the green and 30ft from the pin, you're 20 yards short of the green and about 35-40 yards short of the pin. There's your 3 clubs difference"

If I could have given him a  smiley, I would have.

Suffice to say, his willy waving decreased after this, to the point where he would only comment on his good shots afterwe had all played an were walking to out ball.

I feel I'm missing out - don't think I ever met someone like these people ?

Never bothers me at all , i play with a range of players and abilities so distance doesnt get mentioned much .. had a strange incident in my old club tho , played realy well with 2 strangers one day ..

When we finished i went in for a shower told the guys id meet them in the bar in couple of mins , i duly followed them in and walked up to the bar for one of then to ask me what did you hit to the 6th (par 3 as i had a tap in birdie) .. i stopped and though about it and said PW ..

Not possible was the reply from a complete stranger , i was completely taken aback ,and asked why ?
i hit an 8 was the reply , i just replyed "and the relevance of that to my shot is ?",

there is no way you got there with a wedge , they guys i played with said he did we saw it ..

Again came a definite and loud , No Way .. No way

i said what do you think i should have played? , he said probably an 8 or even a 7 ..

i said grand so i played a 7 iron .. to which the reply was , i knew it , and he turned to 2 others at the bar and repeated, i knew it , i told ye they were talking sh ..

one of the most surreal moments ive ever had in a club house

I had it the opposite way this weekend. Playing in a Stableford comp off the Whites, I'd creamed a couple of shots on 3 and 4. But still teed off last on the 5th, 270 yard par 4. Everyone else took the Driver, so the two that are not regular playing partners were taken aback when I pulled a 4 Iron and proceeded to put it dead centre of the fairway 228yards from the tee. Cue the remainder of the round being praised for being a big hitter and striking lovely shots etc.

Its difficult to accept the praise given that my handicap is 20.8 and I scored 32 points. It's not all about big hitting if you can't hit a wedge in to the green with any degree of accuracy, which is my current issue.
