so today i played in captains day , name down with 3 people i didnt know

all 3 were single figures , immediately i was intimidated , i didnt score for the 1st 6 holes , i was watching working out what they did differently , then it clicked !!!!

they didnt 3 putt , they knocked chips close then holed the putts

after this i actually played ok , but thats the difference

I love playing with better players as you can learn so much about course management from them.
Only thing is not worrying about what they think as most if not all of them have been in your shoes in the past.

Played with.....and against....some county players and ex pro's (reinstated amateurs are ridiculously good yet couldn't make it on the local tour, shows how tough it really is), the main intimidation I feel is they are so consistent and only 1 or 2 bad holes see them shooting a 73 instead of a 67

Put it all down to the learning expierience, it's great to watch quality players at close hand. Look forward to the next time and don't feel
Intimidated as the majority will help you relax and are friendly despite the perceived opinion they are aloof.

not once did i feel uncomfortable, they were great guys , i guess i looked at the score card to front 9, i out drove them alot of the time , long irons they were betther than me , and putting they were great , this is what makes the difference from a wild and wooly 13 to a 5-9 handicap i guess

I always play with better golfers than me and I'm in the same boat as a good few young high handicappers. I can out drive them most of the time but they are always in the middle of the fairway, they always make the sensible choice when getting a ball back in play rather than trying to 'bend it like bubba' and in most cases have equipment to suit their game.

They also do sensible things like get the ball close with their first putt, rarely leave the ball above the hole and generally read the greens better than I do.

Played with loads of good players in my time, including a few from here and there is a lot you can take away. They don't all have textbook swings but find a way to get it in the hole. We have a guy at our place who has the weirdest most agricultural swing going but from 100 yards in he's deadly. Hawkeye plays with him too and shares the same view. How can he do it with that swing, but do it he does.

When you're 28 handicap you very often play with better players :)
I've recently partnered a 6 and a 11 handicapper.
There's nothing more encouraging than genuine praise from these guys when you hit an outstanding shot or make a difficult put.

if you outdrove them on holes and didn't score then you know where you concentrate.

you are not a kick in the arse off singles yourself. just concentrate on getting the up and downs and you will get there.

chipping it closer gives you every chance. we cant hole every putt, but getting closer helps.

I played with the best player at my old club and the thing I noticed most was he hit his wedges so softly. it was never a 100% power strike. 80% at most. 3/4 backswing and low flight.

no surprise I was sent a cutting from our local paper. two 1st places in a row at a local links. 42 points off 2.

Feels like everyone is better than me at the moment! I know that even when I play well my short game from 100 and in is not good enough. Watching Leftie pitch around the greens at Gainsborough really opened my eyes. I don't think he was outside 10 feet in the two rounds we played together. This was coming in over bunkers, shots from 50 yards out with humps and hollows in the way and all sorts. He was so consistent. Must try harder!!!

I try to play with better players as often as I can

I think the more good shots you see in a round the easier it is to do it yourself

I find myself raising my game when I play with these guys

Also the opposite is true, when I play with higher HC's I find I make many more bogeys

In the last few weeks I have played with someone of plus three and someone of 1.

The guy of plus three was long of the tee and had a more than decent short game.
The one handicapper was retired, whilst not as long off the tee he was very rarely in trouble and was always giving himself chances with a very tight short game.
Both of them struggled a little with their putting on the days I played with them but on another day they could have easily dropped for a very different score.

I much prefer playing with better players than myself, particularly in comps. It seems to inspire, motivate me more and concentrate more too.Recently played only my 6th/7th game off the MEDAL tees with an 8 handicapper and his golf for me was outstanding, one of the best if not the best ive played with,on that performance anyway.Playing with him pushed me to a PB off the whites of 91....1 over CSS on the day,for my hcap.

I played with a couple of guys off 4 and 5 at the start of the season, when I was off 12, and the thing it made me realise was that they didn't necessarily hit the ball any better than me. There were 2 major differences: they didn't try and murder the ball every time they hit it, so didn't put themselves in too much trouble; and their short games were much, much better than mine.

So I made a determined effort to swing with more control, and worked on my short game, and my h/c dropped as a result. Playing with low handicappers is like getting a free playing lesson.
