Playing tonight, and spotted cupped wrist.

After several jaunts to the driving range of late and a few slow-mo videos, on the iPhone, I spotted a cupped wrist at the top of my backswing that could be the reason why I'm pushing my drives high and right. I changed my grip lately to a more strong grip from a one knuckle weaker grip after some advice.

I hadn't even realised I was cupping my wrist until i saw the video. I can't seem to get the videos off my phone for now. iOS is sch a closed system, it's a pain.

Anyway, is there any quick fixes to spot when I'm doing it on the course? I'm playing tonight, and fear I'm going to go round the course with it niggling in my mind.

Cheers,

Paul

Swingyde was always a nice product a while back when I saw it. There was the old ruler down the watch trick too but hardly anyone wears watches now. I'll have a look, cheers.

I wouldn't worry about trying to 'correct' it - it's not a problem. Some of the pro's cup their wrist and if you watch their swings, their wrist definitely isn't cupped at impact and I bet yours won't be either.

I agree with the sentiment, but if you have a youtube account.... while you have the video on screen, tap the bottom left icon that looks like a square with an arrow coming from it, and publishing to youtube is one of the options. Couldn't be easier. :)

A cupped wrist tends to open the club face and is typically associated with a stronger grip to counteract it. Langer and Chip Beck were two examples.......

Excellent. That worked. Tried to upload via youtube app. Cheers

But it isn't necessarily a problem and strengthening your grip to counteract it may cause other problems. It's what happens at impact that is important, not necessarily what happens at the top of the backswing

I tend to cup my left wrist when my backswing is too long. If I concentrate on the backswing being complete when my body has stopped turning it's much better. When my arms carry on after the body stops is when the problems start.

So I guess with there being a divide on opinion on the matter, it's less of an issue if you're hitting consistently?

That video actually, was the wrong one. I creamed that one off the tea for some reason, the typical shot, high and true with a wee fade to it. I usually correct for the fade and aim more left on the course, unless the wind is coming in from the left to right, and I'm screwed because I can't hit a draw to save my bacon.

The result there looked good. I wouldn't say there is much to worry about hugely from that clip. My only comment for something to try is to shorten your backswing, finishing off at the 9 second mark on the video. This can give you more controlled distance.

That sounds like a good place to be. Thanks for the tip. I reckon it's about building the muscle memory to retain that shape. I like watching a lot of Peter Finches stuff on Youtube. Guy has a great shape to his swing. Nice and controlled. I don't think it would be too far away to try and stay that controlled through the ball.

Still learning.

We are all still learning! I remember that you are quite new to the game and you certainly seem to be going in the right direction. Keep it going!

Cheers Jamie.

Appreciate that. I'm discounting my early years as I was more a gear head than a golfer/hacker.
