Playing to h'cap

Since reductions are capable of being larger than increases, the balance is by design asymmetrical. So the ratio of reductions to increases will depend a bit on how streaky you are. If you are a steady player who scores the occasional 2 below CSSS, then the ratio of 1 reduction to 4 increases will result in a static handicap. If you are a streaky player capable of the odd 6 below CSS, then you need fewer reduction rounds to stay static, maybe 1:7 or 8.

I would say out of 10 rounds maybe......

better than hcp 2
buffer 3
above hcp 5

Just a guesstimate but probably not too far off the mark?

No. I've missed the buffer most of the season and gone from 10 to 11.3 so I'm not a good yardstick. Out of 10 rounds I would have thought no more than a couple of times to or below but if you are playing well the score and the handicap looks after itself. I don't worry and just try my best each time I play

Even at your level, where greater consistency is expected, there will be Wile Willies and Steady Eddies. Wild Willies would be expected to be have more rounds higher than buffer than below! Steady Eddy Cat ones are likely to have a much tighter 'normal (Bell Curve) scoring distribution.

The Congu Annual Review software 'expects' the average (mean) score to be 1.237*End-of-Season Handicap +1,57.

Had this conversation the other week, couple of the old boys in the club said once a year!!!!! Id say buffer or cut once in 3 rounds is about right

I don't think there is a single accepted ratio as you can fall into one of three categories.

Improving golfer: shooting just off, buffer or better in equal-ish measure

Steady golfer: Short or long term trend of handicap stability.

"Other": Can or was able to shoot lower but cannot always do it, lots of 0.1s back and the odd cut (maybe).

At one time or another ability and handicap will meet or go separate ways, best thing is to just head out and try your best.

I agree with the above, although I might add a fourth catagory, that of a troubled golfer whose game has disappeared into the distance and has been missing for months. Thankfully I've only experienced it twice in over 40yrs.

That's me for sure, lots of rounds hugely over par, then chuck in one round of level par every now and again get a big cut, with lot's of 0.1 increases to follow

If you looked at my playing history over the last two to three years you would say I was about a 22hc, and I've played to 22 quite often, but currently play off 9

The ball striking is there - but the putting a score together has deserted me.

You've seen my scores this year then!

Least there is light at the end of the tunnel now though. :)

A 10hcp shooting level par every now and again? If that's the case I would expect your handicap to be considerably lower.

And so do I.

That's the frustrating thing about my game at the moment.

I played on Friday and had the best ball striking of the year for me - shot +19 (with 12 pars on the card)
