Played today on a very wet course and I was horrendous, I have played before in the rain but this was my first round when the ground was saturated. probably half of my iron shots were awful shanks up the firway, I normally strike irons quite well getting good compression whilst striking down on the ball. Today though i was hitting the ground way before the ball for some reason. Dunno if it was just a bad day or whether there is some secret to playing on saturated ground????

I can't imagine the course is going to be back to solid ground any time soon so need to sort it out ASAP :)

Does anyone else struggle with ball striking in the wet?

nope. you strike ball first then ground and a shank is a shank no matter how wet. just probably had one of those days

I'm another who doesn't think shanks are caused just by the conditions. It's hard in the wet, especially around the green (for me at least) and sometimes you just need to focus on putting a decent strike on it, without being too concerned with distance and focus on keeping it in play.

Certainly I find that if you hit slightly behind the ball when it is wet, you notice it far more than in normal dry conditions.

Indeed - although from a wet matt the slightly fat shot is the safe option!

I am afraid that most handicap golfers generally hit the ball a little fat with their normal shot. It's only when the ground conditions are against them that it becomes a problem.

I always think that these winter conditions can really show up swing problems. So many thing that you can get away with in the nice weather, just gets exaggerated in the cold windy weather. Catching just behind the ball that normally jumps through, turns into a big old fat shot. That nice right to left to right tee shot, turns into a big old slice in the wind.

When the weather turns crappy, you need to start striking the ball a lot better.
