I'm looking at maybe joining a local club who are doing discounted membership until the end of December.
Obviously I've missed a lot of playing time already but as I only took the game up in April I didn't really think about joining a club in earnest.
So what's the crack with playing later in the year? In general are courses still open and playable, weather dependant of course.

I recall playing a course years ago in the Autumn, I think we had to do something called "preferential lie" or the likes to avoid damaging the fairways.

Really dying to get out there more often, feel more confident I won't make an absolute fool of myself on the course

If the course is open then i'm playing :) Generally you'll lose a lot of distance in the winter through the cold and damp. But you can usually lift clean and place when your ball is on the fairway.

Also the greens may be temporary ones sometimes due to bad weather, this is usually just a patch of fairway short of the green that has been mowed a little shorter.

join a Links course would be my advice, best option for winter golf.

I love winter golf and play as much as I can. They keep our place open with trolleys and real tee`s for most if not all the year round.

Nearest links course to me is miles away I think, the course I'm looking at is just 10 minutes up the road from my house.

depends how far "miles" is?

I live 20 miles from my home course and play at least 3 times a week, its always dry, though do have winter greens when there is frost.

With Links you can kiss goodbye to a muddy ball after every shot and muddu shoes and troos. I'm guessing Gateshead can't be that far from the sea;)

:D
Yes not far mate.

Very rare that our winter time greens (still the main greens) are anything other than good, a little slower but fine apart from the wettest/coldest days

Same, Greens are always good, no issue with putting in the main.

Just out of curiosity where are you joining mate?

Ive just started playing and joined chester le street and its a nice course

Ravensworth mate, £200 until the end of the year. Can't really afford shelling out four or five hundred on a full membership and I can't find any other local courses which are doing any late summer offers.

Snell I'm joining Chester le street at end of year if my plans don't go aheAd.

Beezerk email secretary at any golf club and I'm sure they will offer you some cheap membership till the end of the year. No club is going to refuse money. Ravensworth isn't my cup of tea don't know much about winter golf there

Hadn't thought of that Craig, only reasons I'm contemplating Ravensworth is of course the price and it's really really close to me so I can nip up any time and play. I played there maybe 10 years ago, nice views but can't remember much else :D

I joined chester le street 6 months into the year and I only pay for 6 months. They wont expect a full years membership from you.

Give me a shout if you're thinking about joining chester le street and id be more than happy to go round with you

Im not a big fan of Ravensworth neither

Just emailed them mate, I'll see what the response is. Driven past there loads of times and it always looks stunning, I'd love to join a better club like CLS rather than a clarty one ;). The membership document says I need a proposer and seconder so I'll have to see what the crack is.

The secretary will most likely get back to you tomorrow morning. I had no problems signing up. Like most clubs I think they're desperate for cash!

Snell I've been a member at Chester before when I was a junior it's a nice club mate. By any chance you ain't called Chris are you I was playing with me pals up there few weeks back and this lad joined us on 5th and he had just joined few days before had
