Found this website while general browsing at work and thought I'd share it with you all.
Golfing in scotland
Also, to get your views on the Average Fairway Stroke Distance they talk about at the bottom of the page.
It seem like a good idea on measuring a courses true length to me. Although he reckons that Craigielaw has an average stroke distance of 189yds, my average stroke distance last week was about 50yds.

Overall an inspiring piece - I want to move north!

The piece about AFSD seemed unfinished to me - it seems to present the evidence but goes nowhere; it doesn't come to any conclusion.

"There are only two rules for getting out of pot bunkers, broom, or gorse. Memorize these two rules.

Rule #1: Get the ball back in play.

Rule #2: If you think you can hit a great shot and get the ball on the green, see rule #1."

:) you've gotta love this tip on the website.... :)

My course AFSD is 182......what have I learned?? not sure.
It's a clever idea......why not multiply the figure by an "index" that represents the difficulty.

For example....easy fairways + few nasty bunkers/hazards 0.8
average fairways and hazards 1.0
difficult fairways and killer hazards 1.2

My course would be 182 (the AFSD) times 0.8 = 145.
Carnoustie would be 186 times 1.2 = 223
The Belfry would be 198 times 1.0 (say) = 198

etc. etc...

I love the idea of the afsd... great idea for telling how long a course really plays, especially as not all courses are par 72. As one regular course I used to play was a parr 68.

Just worked out my course off the yellows & it plays 167.83. Or off the whites it'll be 175.14

After reading the article, it makes my new course seem short. Still to need to get round I'd still need shots of at least 167 yards to stand a chance of parr.

just worked mine out par 70 in summer, par 69 winter

whites - 175.1 (winter +0.5)
yellows - 166.7 (winter +0.5)

as numbers they compare with Cernunnos'; I don't know his course but mine has not too many bunkers but plenty of water, four dog-legs - two around lakes.

Off blues 190.33 yrds.
Whites 186 yrds.

Not sure that this AFSD means anything really, some courses have huge green some small, some have loads of bunkers some tight fairways so I dont think that determining what he describes as 'the real length' means anything at all.

Tend to agree with this statement. One course I played in Surrey a few years ago had almost every single hole with water on it of some description or another. I reckon 9 of the holes had lakes in front of the greens (should have renamed it WaterWorld!).
To a higher handicapped golfer, this course would have been much harder to negotiate than a course with nice easy run ups to the greens.
