At the end of December I have a"big" birthday - 21 - again!!

The best way for me to spend the day would be playing golf somewhere nice. In the UK it's not the best time of year though!! So does anyone have recommendations for a decent course within say an hour or so of Brampton (Cambs) that should still be in good nick at that time. Already a bit fed up of sloshing around our place so even wondering if getting out to the East coast might be an option even though that's a longer drive...

Any thoughts and recommendations? We'd plan to leave it late to book as if it's hosing it down or even snowing then we won't bother!

I would go east and play courses in Norfolk - Sheringham and Cromer

Or you could treat yourself and come down to Devon or even Cornwall and play Saunton East or West, RND or go down to St Enodoc

That's still on my list to do, my great aunt has been a member there for years. She's well past playing but still socialises there I believe.

Mmmm lots of good choices. Woodhall is a definite possibility as is Norfolk coast...not played Brampton Heath. Could do Royston for nowt as on Smart Golfer but can do that any old day really :-)

Would love Cornwall but bit too far :-)

Looking at your closest Top 100 venues, your options include:

Woodhall Spa (18)
Royal West Norfolk (47)
Notts (48)
Hunstanton (64)
Sherwood (92)

Also worth looking at Luffenham Heath, which is a Next 100 course and hosts the regional Open Qualifier.

Think Id head to the Norfolk coast if it was me Amanda. Other options Id consider would be Woodhall Spa, Woburn or Brocket Hall, both of those tend to fare better than most courses in our local areas

Some good shouts there. Have played The Hotchkin but another go at it would be nice...

Woburn is a place I love but kind of assumed it would be a bit wet and boggy? Brocket Hall would be a new course for me...decisions decisions!

During normal winter weather woburn holds up well- especially the Marquess - even in the big rain last year the Marquess was still very playable

I love the Marquess and they have a deal on my birthday for bacon butty, play 18 holes and 2 course meal for £100...

If I'm bring honest I reckon you could prob get a better deal for Sheringham etc which would be in better condition for Dec and then have a "mid Bday" and you will prob find a deal for Woburn during the late summer

But that would be me - if weather stays ok then the Marquess will be spotless

Food is normally lovely with a carvery

If it is hosing it down and you don't mind 'cheating' a tad, drop me a line. I'm not so far from Woodhall. Your options are The Belfrey, Pebble Beach, Spyglass, La Tempete or Turnberry (unless my wife takes the hint and adds some more for Christmas) - take your pick. A couple of forum members have taken me up on the offer to use it so far and another is due tomorrow. Great bit of kit, maybe not a substitute for the Hotchkin but a lot of fun none-the-less.
