Playing from the wrong tee

Played in a four man team comp at S&A today. We were due to be almost last out and were told that we could go to the seventh tee and start from there as we should be ahead of the field and would not be finishing in the dark. When we got there a group had already teed off and were walking to their shots. We decided to get ahead of them and go to the ninth tee. As we were passing them we said what we were doing and asked if they were the first out, the reply was no, there were over an hours groups of players ahead of them!! The next question was, what hole are you on? The reply was second. As none of us had played there before we thought we had got it wrong and went back to the tee only to find it was the seventh. By this time the leading groups were coming through so we went back to the clubhouse and went out at our original time

By the time we got there the group playing the wrong hole had realised their mistake and had phoned the clubhouse to inform them of their error and said they were walking back to the second to play the correct holes and causing more delays.

What should have happened to that group? DQ or all playing three off the tee on the second for playing from the wrong teeing area or something else?

I assume they all holed out when they played the seventh instead of the second so would those scores have been recorded for the seventh or would they have to play it again when they reached it in the correct order?

If i have understood correctly, the group were intending to play the 2nd, but by mistake teed off on the 7th, and continued to play the 7th. At some point, they realised they'd gone wrong, and headed off to play the 2nd correctly. Is that right? If so..

They would all incur a 2 shot penalty for teeing off from wrong teeing ground. Any shots played after teeing off from wrong tee don't count.You have to correct your mistake before teeing off on the next teeing ground. Provided they corrected their mistake and went to the 2nd tee before teeing off from another teeing ground, then they'd be ok with just a 2 shot penalty. But I assume that if they teed off from another teeing ground before realising, then they'd be DQ.

Yes, that's pretty much it. The two shot penalty is what we thought it would be but if they played the seventh for a second time (the first one being discounted) wouldn't they have technically been practicing on the course, especially putting out?

Backwoodsman is correct with what he says, the fact that they had to play the 7th a 2nd time is irrelevant, they have already had their penalty.
