Really slow round today, which we called time on after 14 holes as it was just tedious, but managed to be made bearable by a player in the group in front who had that Mr Big personality.

Huge swings with the driver, usually slicing off and going nowhere, slamming the driver into the ground, throwing his tee, even knocked a tee box marker over - we couldn't help but laugh as soon as they were down the fairway.

Best bit was seeing them waiting on the fairway for the green to clear at what looked around 220 yards. It's a 200 yard carry to get over the water for them, which all three of us agreed was ridiculous. But still, they waited. The green cleared, he took his swing and, no surprises, it landed in the water probably a good 10 yards short of carrying the water let alone reaching the green. Cue howls of laughter from our group and the two ball who'd caught us up on the tee as he's looking down at ground, no doubt looking for something to blame other than himself.

I get that people are free to play the game as they want, but these types of guys never look like they are having fun. I don't get it. Just chill, learn your limits and enjoy it.

Classic! Made me chuckle just reading it. At the young age of 22, I've seen many cases of this, and have even had the luxury of playing with somebody just as you described. It's not great playing with somebody like this, but its certainly funny to watch them crumble.....

Whilst I sympathise with the rest of your post, that bit you have to be careful of. I know what you are saying but you can bet your life the one day he doesn't wait he will smash it right out of the middle and hit someone on the green!

Couldn't agree more.
We played in a match earlier this year and as we teed off on our 302 yard 3rd I waited for the group on the green to clear out of the way. One of our opponents asked what I was waiting for as "I had no chance of getting it that far!"
His partner, who I played against before, glared at him and told him to shut up.
Then stood on the tee and smashed my driver out the back of the green to a list of expletives that would get me a lifetime ban on here.
It's not how far you will hit it, it's how far you can hit it.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong. If you think you can reach then you wait. He thought he could reach, so regardless of whether we knew he hadn't a snowball's chance in hell of reaching, it was the right decision to wait.

It was the wrong decision to try. But I'm glad he made that decision, because we got to have a good laugh about it :D

Who's Mr Big? Him or you for writing this thread?

I have plenty of time for all types of golfers and rarely do I find their exploits funny - however I would have NEVER stood by and watched him damage the course as you appear to have done.

Wow, easy there tiger.

In fairness to Mr Big, I will always wait for a green to clear if there is any chance I may reach it. I don't want to have to start shouting Fore at people on the green I am playing towards! From 220 yds it's probably a 1 in 10 for me but it does happen sometimes.

Nothing wrong with waiting for the green to clear... trouble is when you do, even the best of us can knob it due to the wait.

Playing a comp last year and and was waiting for the green to clear 260 yards away, one of my playing partners says what are you waiting for, you won't reach in a month of Sundays. Stuck it to a foot, trouble is the group in front were putting. on the plus side my other playing partner was a young lad off +3 they assumed it was him, so he got the blame;)

This is always a difficult one with regard to waiting for the green to clear, we always joke wait for the green to clear then duff it 50 yards, however at my old club one guy did not wait for the green to clear and hit another player full in the chest with a 3 wood from 230 yards.

It took an awful lot longer for then green to clear while he was tended to on the green. Better to be safe than sorry imho.

So 200 carry, 220 to the green and he hits it 190?

Quite right to wait IMO, only another 10 yards carry and he could have bounced it onto the green into the group in front. Sounds to me like you're quite happy to fire balls into the group in front

I'm not at all saying he should have hit into the group in front. I don't quite know why people are misreading me so badly. Of course you wait for the group to move off if you think you can reach them. I can't quite believe it's something that I need to say explicitly.

I guess no one sees the funny side...or its just not that funny.

Everyone agrees that if you're going for the green then you wait irrespective of whether it's a 8/10 or 1/100 shot.

I think the point is that he made the decision to go for the green in the first place, but we play this game for fun (most of the time) so do what makes you happy whether it's the percentage shot or not.

It's context.

I can see why watching someone duff their way round then attempt to take on a 200 yard carry over water is funny.

Sometimes I think people on here are a little too quick to judge. But that's life, I suppose.

I think it's a question of knowing your own game. 220 yards to a green with a carry over water, I know that probably 7 or 8 times out of 10 I can easily make that shot so I would wait for the green to clear. What I would hope though was if my playing partners knew they couldn't make the shot, they would play their shots, even if that meant playing out of turn, to help try and keep things moving and avoid holding up the groups behind.

You dou hit the ball stupid distances though. Perhaps if you went with a 5i instead of a 6i you'd make it every time :D

To be honest I can sympathise with "Mr Big". We've all had days where we're trying our hardest and no matter what we do it doesn't come off. I can see where his frustration was coming from and had it been me and I'd heard you laughing at me then I wouldn't have been happy. As for waiting, I think he did the right thing. It only takes one good shot per round to make it all worthwhile on those days it isn't working. What if that had been the one?
