Just been reading Robobum's post on the R11 & very interesting answer from pokerjoke saying he hits it far enough already so they have obviously played together a bit , the guy must be good to be playing off 3.7 so how much difference would this R11 make over a period of time , can a top of the range club improve a bad golfer , if you gave a scratch golfer a £75 driver would he still get good drives ?/ are we been duped by advertising ?/ at our levels of golf does it make that much of a difference , i have a Ping G5 driver i hit alota fairways 80%+ & they go a fair distance,( most b over 270 ) will the R11 take me to higher percentages & further distances ??? ,

"if you gave a scratch golfer a £75 driver would he still get good drives ?"

Yes

are we been duped by advertising ?

No

I think the R11 would be longer than your G5, I dont think you would hit any more or less fairways.

Yes i have played with Robobum and he hits a great drive,as i remember he hits a nike driver with an upgraded shaft. For me,and Robobum the Taylormade R11 must be a good club for him to even contemplate changing, sacrificing accuracy for distance is a complet no no,as its only borrowed only time will tell.Could a scratch golfer get good drives with a £75 club,of course, there are many great clubs out there for £75 quid, the ping G10 being one.I think with advertising they are very clever, everyone wants the next best thing on the market, wether it be because it is better or for show to your mates. If i was hitting 270 and hitting 80% of fairways i wouldnt change unless i could guarentee the same percentages with at least an extra 20 yrds.

We are definitely being duped by advertising (the "eliptical sweetspot" by Cobra that covers the whole face springs to mind) but not in all aspects of equipment.

Technology is definitely improving. though it is slowing down, simply because all of the equipment manufactorers have pretty much reached the legal limits in pretty much every aspect of the club. Significant improvements will only happen again when the rules on clubmaking change, if they ever do...

Of course there is an element of duping with advertising. If not by now we would all be playing off scratch. Every club that comes out is the longest, straightest ever made, a club that will improve your game, sadly none really do. Only practice and more practice will genuinely improve your game. I posted before it's time adverts said
The new taylormade driver, it's newer and shinier than yours so buy it!

I think equipment does help, getting the right shaft in my driver changed me from hitting 4 fairways to missing 4.

I think the head is less important.

I think the most important thing is practice, you can be as good a player as you like but if you do not practice you will never reach your full potential.

Agree that getting the right shaft would help a lot of players straight away (as would the right loft) but ultimately if you have a bad swing then you won't hit it great. That is why these guys are scratch, because they've found a swing that keeps it straight most of the time. Because of that then sure in theory they could use a £75 driver but I'm not sure it would necessarily perform as well as their own again because the shaft may not be ideal.

I think we do get taken in to some degree or there would be little point in manufacturers bringing new gear out for the amateur market as often as they do. Ultimately its about whether you can afford the new gear, want to get it and think it will make a difference

This is interesting and one AG will lOve. A guy at our course off twelve has just benched he's Callaway driver kn favour of a cheapo nicklaus model. Both the same spec 460cc 10* reg, but the cheap one is finidk b more fairways and longer . If the swing is there kit is not so much a factor

I dont think you would hit any more or less fairways.

Surely, hitting the ball further means less fairways eventually. Or am I wrong.

The reason I hit so many is because I use a shortened square driver that never gets over 240-250. If I got up to 260-270, I'm sure I'd miss more. :o
