Today my playing partner holed out then someone up the fairway shouted he'd played the wrong ball. As he had holed out we thought it was a 2 shot penalty, is this correct? Also if he hadn't holed out, would he have to go back play the original ball and then add on a 2 shot penalty?

assuming it was stroke play scuba?

He needed to ignore any shots played with the wrong ball, find his own ball, add 2 penalty shots and carry on to complete the hole with his own ball.

I assumed strokeplay although you spoke of him as a partner. If he was your partner in matchplay then he is out of the hole.

I'll tell him the good news in the morning, he'll like that.

It won't make any difference if the competition was closed before he became aware of the penalty - his result would stand.
If the competition hasn't been closed he should advise the committee, otherwise there's no point.

Yep needs to go back and correct the mistake before playing from the next tee otherwise DQ. The score for the hole would just be a net double in terms of handicapping the same as a NR

It wouldn't necessarily be an NR/Net double bogey would it? Taking account of his handicap could still be less than net double bogey (even with the extra 2 shots added on) if he had played the original.

I don't think you have understood what HoselFade was saying.
1. If he didn't go back and correct his mistake by playing the correct ball, with penalty strokes, before teeing off from the next tee in a medal competition he is disqualified - the end.
2. But for handicapping purposes a medal card is calculated as a stableford one so his other scores, taken together with the blob on that hole, would be used.

However, if the comp is closed, it's all academic and the scores returned will be used for both.

This is what I meant.

Yes in theory he could take another 10 swipes at the wrong ball, hole it out, see its the wrong ball, go back and find the original and then hole that for a par (assuming a par 4)

Yes, i think we agree, playing the original ball doesn't necessarily mean it will be a blob/net double bogey. Depends what he does, handicap and SI. Max will be a blob/net double bogey for handicap purposes yes.
