Playing match play.
Played my first shot just into the tree line. Took a provisional ball and hit a decent 3rd shot up the middle of the fairway. Found my first ball, took a drop shot as it was in a red staked hazard. Hit it up to the middle of the fairway. Walked up to ball and hit to just off the green.
Then walked up the fairway another 20 yards and found another ball, noticed that this was the origonal ball that was in play and the previos shot was my provisional shot off the tee.
Is this classed as a penalty and loss of hole for playing the wrong ball even though it was my own provisional?

The story is rather confusing. How many balls were actually involved? Cll them A, B & C. What sequence did you play them in and from where exactly

If I have understood the situation, when you found a ball in the PA and dropped under penalty you were substituting another ball. That ball became the ball in play. When you played it you lost the opportunity to correct your mistake. Any ball played after this would be a wrong ball and you lost the hole.

So it would seem that the ball in the PA was not his original. But it (the original) was now not in play because he had put another ball into play when he dropped outside the PA.

When he played the provisional it was a wrong ball.

It sounds like he has put his original ball in the PA. Played the provisional to the fairway. Found the original in the PA, dropped & played it out to the fairway 20 yards past the provisional. Walked up 7 mistakenly played the provisional, then found the original 20 yards on. So his original was in the PA, and he played it to this point in the fairway.

OK I think I've got it at my third attempt. There were only two physical balls.
When you hit the ball that turned out to be your provisional, it was a wrong ball. Lost hole.

This ^^^

Played ball A into trouble so played provisional B up the fairway. Looked for and found A in a penalty area. Took a drop, then played A up the fairway. Walked on & played a ball thinking it was A. Walked on 20yd further and found ball A - and realised he'd just played B by mistake.

Edit: too late ...
