As some of you may already know, the seniors at my local course had been causing me a few problems with constant slow play and I also had an instance where one of them hit a tee shot at me (when I was only 150 yards away).

My reaction to the slow play resulted in a heated debate on this forum (I was called 'ageist' a few times).

So some of you might find this hard to believe but I had a cracking day on the course with my new pal 'Mick'.

I was expecting to play 18 holes on my own today as my usual playing partner is in Dublin for a stag do. But I got to the 4th hole and waiting to tee off on his own was a senior. And after a quick chat about the weather etc, we decided that we'd complete the rest of the round together.

He's 65 and I'm 25, so there's a bit of an age gap but we really enjoyed each others company and pleased to say that we're playing again next Saturday.

I shot 87 and he shot 126, so this meant I had to wait around a lot but I didn't mind because we were having such a laugh together.

It's amazing what can happen within a few weeks.

I think you need to be caeful about tarring all seniors with the same brush. Yes you had a few bad experiences but a lot of them are jolly decent fellows. We have a smal clique or roll up on a Monday who will not let anyone through if their life depended on it but aside from them the rest are pretty good. Don't forget you'll be a senior one day

Did you actually read his post Homer!!?

This is one of the things I like about golf, meeting folk you would never have come across otherwise and getting on great with them.

Happened to me a lot when I started at my plae and my regular playing partners for social games range from my age (32) up to 58. Great blokes all of them.

Nice one Leaney :)

Just goes to show that you can never know what you will take from a round of golf.

I actually like playing with seniors, it takes pressure off me and I can just enjoy the round.

Roll on next Saturday hey.

Cheers

Steve...

Good for you the majority of members are great not matter how old they are hopefully this good expierience has helped forget the previous bad ones!
Happy golfing

Good on you.
I like playing with youngsters, I learn a lot from a variety of other players. We have a number of ex shinty players and they are great to watch playing so accurately right handed with the left hand below the right.

There are three problems with getting older. 1) you start losing your memory. 2) I have forgot the other two.

Leany, I am, Hrumph! north of 60 now but played a two ball in 2 hours 15 minutes yesterday.

it reminds me of the last medal last season at callander.

i was wanting to get down to 5 really badly and even more so 6.at the time i was off 6.6 and was really playing well.i was previously down to 6.3 about 2 wks previous to this and was looking forward to playing with 2 of my friends who are really good.i always find that when you play with better players it spurs you on and ultimately most of the time you play better yourself.

anyway this older gent who i know was looking for a game and the two mates were making it obvious to me that they didn't want to play with him and because i was adding myself to their tee time i decided i would play with the older gentlemen.it did cross my mind that i was really wanting to play well and he's not the best golfer but i thought what the hell and we headed out after my 2 mates.

well it turned out to be my best round of the season and we had such a laugh,it was brilliant fun and probably the best round i have ever enjoyed.i hadn't played since i was 13 but even back then i can't remember having a round that was as fun as that.

i hope to play more golf with him this season coming.

Nice one leaney, being a youngster I find there's a lot of different views on us. I play on my own most of the time, and when I'm out on the course there are some people who invite me into their group and are really great, they're The rounds I enjoy the most even if I don't score well, on the other hand there are people who don let me play through etc and patronise me (a pet hate of mine)... So don't judge a book by its cover :)

In our usual group of 8 or so for a weekend round, there are 3 who are 60+, then a slack handful in their 50's and late 40's - then there's me at 25.

I wouldn't have it any other way. The stories these boys tell, and the banter we share is top drawer. Makes every round with them pure pleasure. No problems with pace in the round either.

Fair play though Leaney, that's what it's all about. Getting out and meeting new people you wouldn't have much chance of coming across in every day life - not for 3 1/2 hours anyway.

how do you define a senior,i'm 54 5ft 11 13 stone and train (hard) 3 times a week i play of 8.6 and shoot in the 70,s most comps, next year i'm eligible to become a senior and will my game suffer because of it will i lose 150 yds on my drives overnight and get the yips on the greens, will i get the urge to buy my clothes from m and s or stack up on the werther originals no is the ans there are seniors and then there are old duffers and you should never mix the two,by the way i have nothing against werthers originals they are just not as good as they where and they used to be bigger ahhh back in the day when!!!!!!!!

If you're eligible to qualify as a senior next year, then I would define you as a senior as of next year.

I buy all of my suits, shirts, ties etc from M & S and I also quite like Werthers Originals. So it looks like I'm 25, going in 55....
