Plastic carrier bags!

They really are becoming a global problem. According to the news report this evening there are millions of tons of plastic dumped in the ocean, even getting into the food chain. And the manufacturers do not want to take the blame - if they did not produce so much and changed production techniques........ Yes of course we can all take more care by discarding properly and using reusable bags.

Why can't we have brown biodegradable paper bags and use cardboard instead of plastic. Surely there are brains out there that can develop more credible ways of packing our goods.

Thoughts?
 
I thought they were degradable.

I used to put them in a drawer at work "just in case" I ever needed one.
When I cleared my drawer out when I left they were like confetti!

Not sure of the date' think it's within a week. But if you get carrier bags from anywhere you will have to pay from them. It will be law.
this in hopefully will have an effect on people's attitudes towards just throwing them away.
Speak to any one in the supermarkets on the tills and they will tell you that some people have already said that it will kick off if they have to pay for a bag. So not everyone is on board.
A checkout woman told me yesterday that if you send 50p buying 10 bags for life you will never have to buy another bag again.
That unfortunately is lost on some folk though.

So much misinformation/rumours and downright heresay and lies are being spouted about this.
As someone who works in this field I come across this at trade shows and on the phone with customers who have picked up a bit of
something and it has grown arms and legs and been turned into total bullshot!
The green brigade may have started out with good intentions but it has been turned into a 'far lefty do goody/goody,save the planet
without knowing the full facts of whats envioronmentally friendly and what isn't.....and believe me paper is not plus it is dammed
expensive to produce.
Check the website for what can and what can't be charged...the charge is totally voluntary and not legally binding if you have less than 250 employees!
Rant over(but Ido get wound up about this......especially since the loopy do gooders in the SNP got there totally over the top way here
in Scotland.

Paying 5p for a bag already happens in Wales and Scotland. Therefore I doubt it will kick off over here. Yes some people will grumble but we're british you just get on with it. It's only 5p per bag. If people have an issue they will quickly learn to bring your own bags...which imo is good practice.
 
Been bringing my own bags for a while now so should notice it.

I do know a lot of people will just end up buying rolls of plastic bags to replace the ones they used to collect up for dirty jobs round the house like cat litter etc...

Bags are useful and I will miss having my stock in the cupboard a little. I will try to be greener and use reusable round the house as well as shopping now.
 
Usual shopping trip, approx £100. "New" shopping trip, £100.30p. Am I really that bothered? It's going to cost me an extra £1.20 a month at the very most... charge me £1 a bag and I'll change my habit, but for 5p... non-event.
 
It's about changing habits. They have been doing this in France for years now and everyone turns up at supermarkets with BFL. Once you get that you do the same. Not a biggy and those getting uppity about it need to have a look at themselves.
 
I've not bought a bag yet since Scotland started charging 5p for them. I have a wee stock in the car boot for when they are needed. Goldust now for the good ones. I protect them with pride lol

Hits home hard though when you see a plastic 'thing' wrapped round the head or foot of a wild animal.
 
ID uses bags for life so we try and keep plastic bag use to a minimum. We always use to have paper bags and can remember them fondly in the greengrocer and even the butchers as a kid. Why can't we simply go back to those days and how hard would it really be for supermarkets to simply find paper bag manufacturers and switch

hobbit the 5p you will pay at Asda will be a "bag for life", unless you forget to take them with you.then you get charged well another 5p😀
 
I suspect the issue with paper bags is that they split too easily. Probably a greater cost as well by the time they produce a thicker paper bag. That option also defeats the object which is to reduce the amount of waste / throw away items we have. Within 2-3 months people will have BGF as standard and you will forget the fuss. Lots of other countries have managed this, are we really that incapable of managing?
