Four of us are going to the Open at St Andrews next year, and are looking for accommodation. We have booked up three nights at the Westport in St Andrews itself for the first three nights of our trip, at their standard rate for July of £130 a room. We are two couples so not too bad.

The following three days which cover the first three days of the Open would be £275 per night.

We are therefore looking for somewhere to stay out of town, up to about a one hour drive, which will hopefully be cheaper.

B & B will be fine, but would like somewhere scenic, possibly coastal, and a good base to explore other parts of Scotland for days we do not go to the golf. (Close to a decent golf course would be a bonus :() I did look at Crail, but B & B rates are still nearly £200 a night. I think we need to get further away to get a good deal.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Does it have to be a B+B? If not have a look at some of the self catering properties in the area. Could probably get one big enough for a week for around £800-1200, especially if you are prepared to be an hour away, which means if you could cancel the rooms at the Westport you could save money and stay in one place for the week.

Good idea, but we really want to stay in St Andrews for part of the week. The girls have not been to the town before, and it is an amazing place to stay. Great buzz, people, food etc, and you can walk from your room straight to the course. I just love the place. Hopefully will get up close to the players in the practice rounds.

Must admit when we drove to Carnoustie we were not bowled over by the area Gordon. The weather was foul so we may have missed something, but the only part of the area we loved was the course !!

its a dump! you wanted scenic, Elie/Kilconquhar and you'll want to buy a place there

Agreed, not the prettiest of places but it's within an hour of St Andrews, has plenty of accommodation and apparently there are a couple of half decent courses in the area ;)

What about Dundee ? Premier Inn right on the Tay 2 minute walk to the train station where you get the train to Leuchars and you get bussed straight to the course.
Plenty courses to play in the area as well.

I reckon you could do him a deal Steve......£75 a night for bed and a bacon roll? ;)

Your probably right, i could rent my house out for 2 weeks and go holiday, nice wee earner, mine has cracking views over the River Tay as well ( he did say scenic ). And no its not a Multi Story Block.:D

We've stayed in Perth at previous Opens. Route from there is towards Dundee, and then over the Tay bridge. Me and Mrs Hobbit will be there again next year.

Perhaps we can meet up for a beer Brian ?

We are looking for somewhere scenic rather than near a golf course !! Looking for brownie points guys .;) Will be playing golf whilst we stay in St Andrews in the first few days, last few we need somewhere to drive in from to watch the golf, but that is not £200 plus a night.

Perth could have been an option, but there is one big problem, the Tay bridge. I can't drive over bridges as I have a bit of a problem with heights. Already planned route around the Forth Road bridge, when we drive in from Edinburgh.

I'm not keen on heights either - but in three hours I'll be up here :o

Generally Fife is going to be expensive during the Open, it's a balance between travelling time in open traffic and cost - Premier Inn at Riverside in Dundee is a good option as it has train station across the road which would mean you could avoid the traffic going into St Andrews - shut your eyes as it goes over the Tay Bridge.
