I am in Edinburgh next month for a Scottish construction industry dinner and have an extra night stay over. Can anyone recommend a decent restaurant and a couple of bars where I can go with my wife.

Watch where you go. They're a weird bunch over in the East......I mean they have salt n sauce on their chips instead of salt n vinegar. ;)

I liked The Worlds End pub on the royal mile, quaint little pub with good food.
A Scottish restaurant I liked also on the royal mile was Wee Windaes, where I had my first taste of haggis and venison 😃

The Oxford Bar for a pint........if it's good enough for John Rebus........

Middle ground really, not looking cheap and cheerful but could do with not taking a second mortgage when the bill comes.

Andalusia on George St is a very good Spanish restaurant, Tail End on leith Walk is the best fish restaurant in Edinburgh, Conan Doyle in the centre of Edingburgh is a good pub restaurant but very busy, also a very good Itailian Restaurant opposite the playhouse theatre is Mama Rosa.

In my experience the best of the following styles are:-

Italian: La Lanterna (Hanover St). Been going there for 30 years and NEVER had a bad meal
Indian: Khushi (Antigua St) Got a great reputation
Thai: Time for Thai (North Castle St)
French/Scottish: Chez Jules (Hanover St) Queues out the door.
Posh: The Witchery (Castlehill) Always rated up there or The Tower Restaurant (Chambers St) likewise

Pubs: Sandie Bells (Forrest Road) Good beer/ambience and live fiddle music
Bannermans (Niddry St/Cowgate) (Rock & Whisky Bar)
BrewDog (Cowgate) Strong craft ales
Jazz Bar (Chambers St) Live Jazz every night
The Dome (George St) Most amazing architecture. Former bank. Worth a visit for that alone. Le Monde next door is trendy too.

Tail end changed ownership - avoid!

Fishers in the City for seafood (Thistle Street)
Passorn for Thai (Tollcross)
Steak for, errm, steak (Picardy Place)
Mother India for a contemporary Indian (Infirmary Street)
La Lanterna is a good shout for Italian

If La Lanterna is like it is in Glasgow then its a big hit and i would also recommend it. Bar wise you are spoiled around George St and Rose St.

Where is your dinner being held?

I don't think they're related. The Glasgow one was one of my favourite restaurants when I lived in the Weege.

My choice by some distance! Also does excellent Steak, but just doesn't seem right there!
Though the sister (and original) Fishers in Leith Dock is pretty good too.
And the place next door to that - general Pub restaurant owned by same group - was pretty good too.

Thanks for all the tips, over 20 years since I have been to Edinburgh and that was for the rugby so my memory is a little blurred. Will run them all past my wife and let her take her pick.
