Anyone else watch this last night on BBC2 (9th July). I remember the disaster very clearly - and also seeing the footage of the first major explosion on the rig and thinking 'my God...'

An excellent and very moving documentary.

rather hope my mum wasn't watching as my brother works as a engineeering design and quality assurance engineer on the rigs and spends a lot of time out on them.

Yup, one of the most moving things I've seen on TV for ages.My old man worked in aberdeen at the time and knew lads on Piper.after that night he got a desk job and never went off shore again.

Can't imagine the noise, heat, stench that night.

My father worked in the oil/petroleum business all his working life, latterly advising on H&S and decommissioning of rigs in the Frigg Field. His work involved exposure to the cause and result of PA and, not surprisingly, he never talks about it. The positive to come out (if there can be one) was the new regulations guarding H&S and design of rigs which will hopefully ensure this sort of tragedy will never happen again.

You tend to remember events that coincide with your birth date... This for me is sadly one of them... Fair to say the entire nation was in shock as news of this unfolded at the time...
