The following tale shows how easy it is to fall out on a golf course.

A group of Wednesday evening swindle players included one player [A] off 3 who was a good old fashioned English gentleman, ex captain and quite competitive but sporting.
The other guy was a laid back 6 handicapper who was one of the clubs most popular members.
I played quite a lot with both guys and they were good company.

Player B was a pipe smoker and was in the habit of laying his pipe beyond his ball when he made his stroke.
Player A one day jokingly suggested that he was using his pipe as a line indicator and the smoke as a wind indicator.
Player B was always careful to line the pipe up the same way with stem facing the hole.

Player did not see the joke and asked if he was being accused of cheating.

It escalated quiet sharply after that and involved telephone conversations with the R&A who suggested that player B was probably unaware he was in breach of the rules.

The club fell into two camps and was quite an uncomfortable place to be for a while.
Player B did not renew his membership

Blimey!

That tale also shows how people take golf far too seriously. The fact didn't just laugh it off though suggests he knew exactly what he was doing. Odd place to put his pipe. He would have far more Kudos if he kept it in his mouth whilst taking his swing.

The last line should read...

"the playground fell into two camps until Miss Drumond sorted it out and threatened everyone with detention if it was brought up again".

That's pipe smokers for you.

As a cigar man, I've had nothing but pleasant conversations on the course regarding smoking apparatus!

Interesting this.
As a pipe smoker I have had a few comments, spoken in jest, that the pipe laid on the ground could be used as an alignment aid as indeed it could. I always make sure it is set at an angle to the line of play.

Lay the pipe wherever they want - just make sure the smoke doesn't blow into FC faces when they are playing

Is the right answer

Greatest load of old cod i ever heard using pipe smoke as a wind indicator , if someone cant tell what way the wind is blowing where they are standing they shouldnt be allowed out on their own ..
if someone actually thinks he is using it as a line indicator then they shouldnt be out on your own either ..

As i said earlier it sounds personal to me ,

The pair were good friends up to that point and I shall repeat it was a jokey comment not meant to be taken seriously.
