Our kid is looking to buy his 1st set of clubs and he also wants to go down the ping route!

he is looking at ping G20's (maybe because of the price) but would he be better paying the extra and going for the G25' or even g30. Will he gain anything by going for a more recent model?

i am unsure if he has tried different brands but I presume he has that is why he wants pings

cheers Matt

sorry forgot to add he is playing with some very old 2nd or 3rd hand mcgregors

I'd say buy the model he can afford.
He'll not see much difference in performance from the models mentioned IMO.
All 3 excellent clubs & you'd struggle to find a more forgiving iron.

I have 2x set's of Ping's G15 & G20.
My mate also plays with a set of G10.
Tbh, I find there is very little difference between any of them.
Maybe if anything the G15 shafts feel a little softer.
All the set's are mega easy to hit & produce a lovely dependable ball flight.

One thing I would recommend though, is make sure you get the correct flex shaft's for your swing speed & also get the correct lie angle (Pings are dot colour coded for lie angle)

Brilliant easy to hit irons.
Going on past experience, I wouldn't have thought the G25's or G30' would be hugely different, except for the price.

Cheers for you replies :)

he he just been in american golf for a play and they told him they can't adjust any of the g20 or g25's just off the peg irons only!

they can only adjust g30's

advised he is black dot which coincidently is the ones they have available ;)

I think Ping do a good static fitting online so that might be worth a shot? And as an owner of G30s I'd really recommend them. Plus I got them cheaper at a local pro (who had the proper ping fitting gear) than any of the big stores could match.

They are just trying to flog him the clubs they can make the most profit on. You can send any club back to ping to be adjusted lie wise for free (you'll have to pay postage but thats it)

I use the G25s, having just switched from G20s which I used for 2 years. Other than cosmetics, there is no performance difference that I can see. G20 was great, go for them.

Somehow I don't believe that AG can't adjust a set of clubs. Seem a little bit of a naughty fib, just to sell the latest model/more expensive set of irons? Perhaps they are on a commission this month to sell the Ping G30's..... Bloody retailers!!

I have a lovely set of G15's for sale, great condition, 3-SW in black dot, standard very thing else......

Great forgiving clubs, just fancy a change now.

Seems his mind is set on Pings..Wonder why though..Ben Ross, MD Golf, Snake Eyes and even Mizuno are really good value buys, and make great gear.

This was my issue with AG when they fitted me for my 25's. Black dot regular. Fitting at Ping Marron dot 1/2 inch longer in stiff!! Funny as AG only stocked black dot standard.

I'd go for the G25's of the older models, little less chunky and a good step up from the others but not to different from the 30's. At the end of the day though cash is king!

As mentioned above, Ping will adjust any of their clubs for free, you just pay the shipping to and fro. If you want to buy the clubs new, then go to a local pro that can fit them properly, wouldn't take AG's word for it. If you're OK with second hand, go for the black dot then ask your local pro for a fitting, he'll check loft and lie, let you know and you can send them to Ping for adjustment. I may be wrong here, but one thing to note if I remember correctly is that there is a limit to the loft change they can make to a club, roughly 2 degrees. Maybe worth getting checked proper first.

I use G-15's and they are a great club, the G30's look nice but I don't think they will give me any more benefit really, other than to make me feel like I've got some better irons...... still, when I'm a bit flush, may look to "upgrade"....

So no surprise there then! I have always been advised by AG that standard lie clubs will be absolutely perfect for me, whereas proper fittings always show that I need 2 degree flat lie angles! Basically they are only interested in flogging what they have in stock.
