Interesting first for me today.
I played at Nene Valley (Thorpe Wood) this morning and was surprised to find that they'd resited the pin position on to the fairway in front of the green.

I've never seen this before.
The green itself was partially covered in ice and they'd put the hole on the fairway about 2 yards short of the apron.
There was no way of telling until you were almost there.
It was crazy how hard it was trying to putt through frosted grass :D

At my course (Bishopswood), 6 of the 9 holes will be like this much of the winter. Make the par 3 5th a tricky hole as there is a stream right in front of the green. Impossible to go for the hole and putting back down the green too hard will see you in the stream.

If it's more than 3 foot, chipping the ball might be a better ploy.

At my previous club they occasionally had to put pins on the fairway. When they did they'd put two circles round the pin, one at about 3 feet and one at about 9 feet. If you got inside the outer circle you could pick up for a 2 shot gimme. The inner circle was a one shot gimme. Non-Q's only of course. Saved a lot of time and swearing.
