I usually go on sim deals only and buy my handsets, for me this is the cheaper alternative. So I bought a new handset after doing some research (but not enough apparently). O2 had a good price on the hand set for a pay as you go, even buying a £10 top up it worked out cheaper. Unfortunately despite me asking in the shop, can I get this unlocked, the answer being yes, they refused to unlock the phone and said I have to own it for a year locked to their service.
So all I can say is their pay as you go service is really a 12 month contract service with variable usage ... Surely this is against he trade description act?
I am now looking at unlock services but if that doesn't work they will get the hand set back. Not happy at all I feel I have been miss sold something and it was not made clear that they would lock me to their service !!
Does anyone have experience of unlock services?

Look for a small independent phone shop, they can usually unlock them. I'd be inclined to take it back more out of principal.

yeh find a shop, i wouldnt send it anywhere personally. I got a blackberry done last year for about £15. quite often the phone cover sales places in markets can do it!

Have seen it where the unlock codes aren't released on certain models until they have been on the market for a set time period or until the SIM has been activated for a set period (usually one month)

This is what is worrying me, at the moment I have an old handset but its been a bit grumpy locking me out and dumping the signal etc.. I have gone to an online unlocking company which has been unable to unlock it so far, but we'll see if that was just a scam or not.

Some mobile simply can't be unlocked for various reasons: The IMEI number cannot be found in the database, or the device was a pre-release, not-to-be-sold device. There are many online vendors provide the cheap unlocking solutions.Use the services from good reliable online providers like http://www.classicunlocking.com/ for GSM network. From the online vendor you will get the unlock code and instruction. To get the code you need to submit your mobile model ,country name, network provider name and IMEI number.

Which handset is it? I've always unlocked all of my phones myself. It's usually a relatively simple procedure, just Google your handset + unlock.

This. Checked with local unlocker £15. Checked online £5 from somewhere in USA I think it was. Fast, efficient and worked.
