I use my iphone.. golfshot was a good app for it.. £15 a year I think for the sub but I then started using hole 19 as a free version!! just as good tbh

now I use game golf... as I have an apple watch so the game golf live is always syncing to the watch so I get live score on the hole and distance to the green (front back and middle) on my watch which is useful (£112 for the game golf no on going fee)

I have tried Hole 19 for when my GPS batteries die. The biggest thing I noticed was how much of drain it was on the phone battery, whether this is true of any app I do not know.

If you want to do gps on the cheap buy a used watch from ebay. There are plenty on there from time to time with broken straps. Just attach these to your bag.

I tried it round the par three and found it very distracting. I felt I spent more time tapping the phone than thinking about golf.

Maybe if it was a longer course and it was in a holder so I could just tap and go.

Without a holder it's way too much of a faff.

I've started using VPAR.

i like the fact that you and mates can actually set up a live scoreboard too. Seems to work well. Had our course mapped wrong as we've changed layout and they sorted it in 48 hours.

My mate uses his Iphone with one of the apps - it might even be Skycaddie - along with a Range-finder. Has a trolley with 'basket' so attaches a charging unit. seems to work very well.

thanks. I have downloaded hole 19. It's seems good just getting some notes as well about the course and hazards etc

I had really high hopes for this when I bought my smartphone The first two apps I downloade where GameGolf and GolfPad. Then I found out that our course doesn't have cell phone reception. So I am back to using my Garmin S2.

gamegolf you can predownload the course and then it runs off GPS not phone signal

I use Hole 19 for GPS and it's really good for a free app. Yes it drains your phone a lot as others said, but never so much that it doesn't last the round. I find the distances accurate as long as you give it two seconds to pinpoint exactly where you are standing. I like how you can get distance to a certain point as well (i.e. distance to lay up before a bunker or something) and not just the distance to the green or pin. Also the overview of the hole is handy on blind tee shots and doglegs. You can put your scores in, along with how many putts you took, and it works out your % G.I.R and up-and-downs from that, and saves all of that info for you. For a free app I can't fault it at all.

I've a windows phone (free personal use with work) and have the FreeCaddie app, very basic but pretty accurate yardages and loads/refreshes quick enough.

Iv been using 18 birdies app and swing by swing golf, I like that both keep stats and round information to look back on, 18b can be a little slow on the gps positioning but has more info, try both they are very good, I have just ordered a used Bushnell watch for distance and will use the app more for a score card from now on
