Phillip Hammond

He isn't far wrong in what he said though

Timing is more the issue

A fair amount of wishful thinking from an otherwise pretty good Cabinet Minister - and my MP!

Putin is far better at the 'front' game than most Western leaders and this is merely something to stoke up 'local' awareness of a (the Ukraine) situation that UK has no real influence in. His knowledge/approval of the Litvenenko murder is virtually undisputed!

Crimea is highly unlikely to return to Ukraine - in spite of condemnation in UN and elsewhere. And there is very little real Russian involvement in Donbass - at least compared to the way US sends in troops - so the 'expenditure' is trivial compared with more the ominous general build of weapons/forces - being (over-)matched by US!

Putin may be a tyrant and the human rights travesties throughout the region well known and unacceptable but at this time of negotiating a human right truce to help the most in need to escape the atrocities is crass and ill timed at best

And the Ukraine is in no way is part of Europe.Or NATO, which means nothing really.

NATO may be debatable but to dismiss the Ukraine as not being part of Europe is to overlook both its history and location.

I may have completely missed your meaning in the post, but I don't believe there is ever a time when such a truce is not a good thing!

Are you suggesting that the perpetrators could escape justice?

Sorry. My point is they are trying to negotiate some kind of truce to let as many escape the conflict in Ukraine as they can as safely as possible and Hammond weighing in with Putin is a tyrant hardly helps the diplomatic process and the timing was poor. I've no idea about the perpetrators and whether they'll ever get brought to justice.

Ukraine is part of Europe

I thought that. Then I thought it must be me!

To simply claim it as part of Europe is ridiculous imo. I think it's significantly more Russian oriented than European, both in history and location. It's East of Poland, Hungary and Slovakia and nearly 20% of the population are Russian speakers for example!

But since 1991, there's been a gradual move towards Europe politically, with consequent, and understandable imo, anxiety by Putin.

Okay..So why doesn't Putin and the seperatists agree with you?

I'm not sure - haven't had chance to ask them

Doesn't really matter what they say - Ukraine is part of the continent of Europe just as Russia is

Thankyou.
