After watching the recent official films of the us open and seeing how many times lefty does stupid things if he had indeed had say steve williams on the bag or a more sterner / conservative caddie who pressured or could persuade him to play safe at certain times would he have won more?
Personally i think he would the 2006 us open blow up on the 72nd hole was strictly ridiculous as a prime example.
any one agree?????
p.s i love Phil and the way he plays

When he's making those mistakes for financial gain it's going to take a better man than Williams to talk him around......:smirk:

Sometimes you wonder if he takes anyones advice, smash the driver everytime, and never go for the conservative play.Dont think the penny will ever drop with this guy.

I don't buy into the hype of Steve Williams to be honest.

Tiger woods has helped him win loads of majors!

I just feel that Phil should be using that magnificent short game to win majors instead of using it to get out of the poo that trying to wack the ball into oblivion requires him to do

Think Liverpool phil means Michelson not Williams . I may be wrong but I think Williams accompanied tiger to 13 of his 14 majors.
The initial thread was about lefty being given more conservative advice at key moments.

Interesting question. To be honest I don't think a different caddy would have made too much difference. Mickleson tends to have a wayward/cavalier approach to his driving at times and so is reliant on a stellar short game and putter. For me, it has been the putter in recent years that has perhaps not been as deadly all the time. I don't think another bagman would have helped and that Mickleson would still have elected to take on the shot regardless

Mickelson and Bones are a partnership, and if you listen to Bones he doesn't let Phil take on a shot unless he is confident in his own ability to make the shot happen. The pair of them are like a married couple with their conversations, I don't think one would be as good without the other

I think too much is made of the caddy's influence. The caddies don't hit the shots. Supposing at the 2010 Masters Bones had persuaded Phil not to go for the green at 13? Not only might Phil not have won but we would have been deprived of one of golf's greatest moments.

I read somewhere of an incident at a tournament where Phil wanted to hit a downwind 3 wood high over a dogleg, claiming the extra height would fly the ball further than a driver due to the wind. Bones talked him out of it, he played the hole the more conventional way and birdied it. Later, some tests were made, plenty of Maths and Physics and the consensus was that Bones was right - if Phil had gone for the carry he wouldn't have made it.

But that's the way Phil plays the game. He'll go for shots that some might shy away from. Sometimes they don't work, but when they do he wins - how many players would have gone for the green on the 13th at Augusta a couple of years ago....? OK, it might have ended up on the creek, but it didn't! Who dares Wins and all that...
