USER1999
Grand Slam Winner
I have a 50 foot long beach hedge along the front of my house. It's about 8 ft tall, and gets cut twice a year. It over hangs the pavement by between one and two feet, depending on the time of year, and when it was last cut. The pavement is about 8 feet wide, may be more, so there is still plenty of room. It's about due a trim.
Three weeks ago, Mrs mogs was outside on the pavement talking to a friend, when some old biddy walked past, loudly mumbling to herself about how people shouldn't have over grown hedges, blocking the pavement, etc, despite not having to deviate from her chosen path to avoid the massive barrier to her progress.
That night, mysteriously, a flipping great hole was cut in the hedge, about 5 feet across, and five feet high. Cut all the way back to the trunk. It looks ridiculous.
About twice a week since, this hole has been made bigger, and is now about ten feet across. The cut off branches are now starting to be dragged up my drive, and placed in front of my car, just in case I'm not getting the hint.
Now there's nothing I can do about it, but it doesn't make me want to go and cut the thing. It has the opposite effect.
If the council wanted it cut, they would write to me. But they haven't, and I'm far from the only person in the road with a bit of an over hang.
If I catch them at it, there's nothing I can do about it, as who but me is going to care? I can't exactly lump an old biddy either.
The only up side, is that if I leave it long enough, she will have cut it for me, and I won't have to bother.
I doubt it will ever grow back properly, as the correct time for heavy cutting back is February, not June, and cutting half of the width of the hedge away is a bit of a savage cut anyway.
