Pet insurance

What sort - pictures please :-)

I can recommend where not to go and that's E&L. We did finally get paid out about 50% and our vet says they are the worst to deal with. Sorry but can't recall who she said was the best!

We contacted our local vet, and asked who he felt was best to deal with, seeing as he's on the receiving end. Might be worth you asking there. And congrats on the new arrival.

He's a French Bulldog.
Didn't think of asking the vet,Cheers Hobbit.

Gorgeous looking pup :)

weve used Tesco's and had no issues at all when making a hefty claim a few years back, always worth reading the small print as they all try and exclude based on existing conditions and some will do so on conditions specific breeds are likely to get

Yep used tesco too and had no problems with a large claim when doggy cut his paw quite badly.

Whichever you choose do read the small print very carefully. Some plans will only cover you up to a limit, some as little as £2500 which doesn't take long to get to with vets fees these days. The premiums with Petplan definitely aren't the cheapest and they will increase as your puppy gets older and more susceptible to the usual complaints of old age, but for peace of mind they're excellent.

Stick a couple of hundred away (or whatever you are comfortable with).
If the dog is fixable up to whatever price point you have put away, there's your insurance.
If it needs more cash thrown at it than what you've put by.......woods, dog, shotgun, BANG! Simples. :)

Seriously. I reckon it's a bit of a con tbh (but that doesn't really help that much). Maybe we were lucky that our (now deceased dug) never needed the vet until it went for a long sleep.
Cracking looking wee pup you've got though. :)

We've been with Morethan for 2 years now, having used them previously for a different dog and made a claim when the dog actually died, they were brilliant. But their renewal price this year is up quite a bit, so after reading through lots of reviews and scary stories about insurance companies not paying up and vets not performing surgery on insured animals until they were paid upfront, the only companies I didn't read bad reviews on were Morethan and Petplan. Iv'e gone with Petplan who are widely regarded as the dogs dooda's :D

Oh and Lifetime policies are definitely worth a look...

We used Tesco for years with our old boys, Arnold had various issues and they never jibbed at the claims, however be aware it is very easy to spend many thousands of pounds on treatment.

Ensure that your claim limit is sufficient and that the insurer will continue to insure for the life of the animal.

we now have a much smaller dog and our vet recommended Agria pet insurance, I havn't made a claim so cannot comment on how good they are.

I would again stress DO NOT underinsure, vets fee's will make your eyes water.

I know this only too well.
One of my partners horses got a nasty cut on its leg & had to have an operation.
I honestly don't know how they can charge so much.

Tesco do a decent policy. Think carefully though, as they are all very expensive and have the excess set very high, so the odd injury, or the routine treatment is never covered. I have had dogs for years and never bought insurance; if I were to add up all the premiums that I would have paid then that would add up to a serious outlay. Only times we have need a vet is when any of ours have had pups, or when one went lame and had to be x-rayed.

The flip side of that was Arnold my old time bulldog, x2 ACL replacements, emergency surgery for eating 2 stones, Lymphoma (a year of chemo) and an enlarged heart = approx. £25,000.00 over his 9 year life. Tesco picked up the vast majority of the costs.

No wonder the cost of their Lambrusco goes up and up. Suppose I have been lucky. We have only ever had working Labradors tho; aren't bulldogs notorious for congenital health problems?
