So today we had a PGA qualifier the winner gets to accompany the club pro in the qualifier for the Lombard Trophy, so i turned up to the medal started a little rusty then by the time we got to the 8th tee I was 1 over gross 4 under my handicap by the end of the 8th hole I was only 1 under my handicap and by the 12th I was 6 over! I could not believe how my game just disintegrated!

I feel ya pain believe me, at my old club off 14" I was one over gross after 9, I walked 14/15/16 as I couldn't physically hit a ball.

I had a great start, 1st ball in water hazard, drop, 3rd Shot heart of the green 2 putts for a bogey. For some reason nil consistency today a lot of hooks, and 3 balls lost on the 6th. 1 ball lost on the 7th, 1 ball lost on the 14th. That's a record for me 6 balls lost in one round, lately I've not lost one, put the odd one OOB by not lost any.

Still managed to only play to 7 over my handicap. Well that's Mays bad round out of the way

Id thought I might be able to get a nice handicap reduction!! but not to be sadly! but the first 7 holes I wasnt really doing anything special it was just sensible golf!

I always think that you just made the biggest mistake in golf. I tend not to look at my scorecard and just keep going, you know in your head if your playing well or not. I hate it when people start telling me what my score is half way round.

I think your subconscious mind kicked in and cocked it up for you. You said it yourself that you where 4 under your handicap, problem then is you start trying to defend it rather than carrying on like you where. You then have a bad hole and start to think you have thrown away a good round and then just loose it.

I've certainly had a few spectacular collapses.

But a few times 'playing through the pressure' have been particularly enjoyable too!

I had a mini collapse on Saturday after it looked like I was on track for a comp win. Bounced back well with steady controlled golf to still put in a decent score.
Took a lot of positives from it.

you have hit the nail on the head there!!

Played in a BMW Society outing at (my home club) Bearwood Lakes. Finished front 9 2 under gross off 9 handicap, having hit all fairways and greens and never looked like having a bogey. Could have been 5 under.

Had a sausage sandwich at the halfway hut followed by a cricket score for the back 9. I have been suspicious of sausage sandwiches ever since.

Probably had a few over the years but this is the most recent one.

Playing in a medal last year (off 4 (exact 3.6)) and trying to get to play off 3 for the first time.

3 over after 12 holes and all thoughts of getting to a 3 handicap were off. I then birdied the next 4 holes to get to 1 under with 2 holes remaining. As I walked to the 17th tee I started to count the chickens and work out what my new handicap was going to be. Took my eye completely off the ball and was too aggressive off the 17th tee and went OOB to rack up a triple bogey 7.

Now stood on the difficult 18th tee thinking a par would get me 0.2 off the handicap (still positive thinking) and a cut to 3.4. Did the hard bit and got on the green in two but then managed to 3 putt. At the time it felt like I had just lost the open. I am usually quite pleased to knock a 0.1 off but this time it was no consolation at all.

The lesson here is never get ahead of yourself, I was also trying to get 5 birdies in a row which is something I had not done before.

However, not long after this I was having a friendly knock and I birdied those same 4 holes in a row again. This game certainly kicks you in the teeth as I then also birdied the last two holes for 6 birdies in a row.

I have said it before. Pork products ruin a good round. Whether bacon roll, sausage sarnie or even sausage roll.

I won the Lombard trophy qualifier at my club this year, off to Burnham and Berrow in July with the club pro for the next round.
Just to rub it in a bit ;)

Had so many melt downs over the years and thrown a number of good finishes and wins away. It happens and these days I am trying to take positives about ball striking, short game, etc rather than dwell on errors.

A score is only a score when it has been signed for never count your chips while your sitting at the table and all the rest of the clichés. Everyone on here I am sure has lost count of the times they have destroyed a good score by looking at there scorecard and dreaming, take the positives though if you got in that position once you can do it again.
