Peoples golf

In theory it sounds ok, but in practice will be won by a bandit with a bent handicap, shooting 54 points off a 3/4 hadicap of 24, when he really should be on tour.

Been caught out like that before.

Good luck if you enter.

I'm pretty sure there was a piece in one of the broadsheets about this event. Apparently this so called 11 handicapper was hitting 260 yard drives and peppering flags all day at the final. He might be a good player on a good day but the tone of the piece didn't sound as convinced.

I'm sure there was one of these type of things way back inthe 80's that I entered (think it might have been the Sun off the back of Lyle and Faldo winning majors) and we all had to produce certificates. Obviously with technology these were harder to forge but I remember there were two ladies at check in and their job was to call each club and verify the certificates. There were at least two guys caught with a certificate not matching their current handicap. It certainly made it a level playing field although I'm not sure anyone would take that level of responsibility anymore. I failed to trouble the presentation party!

I concur
I will have £100.00 with you now that nobody with an offical handicap under 5 will win that competition
I tell you what, make it £500.00
;)

I played in 2 of these before - both matchplays - one a team and one singles - never. never again.......

Too many people who are not members of proper clubs (or at all) with 'handicap' certificates.....

As long as people are prepared to lie about their handicap that's what's going to happen. How many times have we had folks on here asking about handicap certificates ? If you're entering a competition using a bogus handicap you are cheating as far as I'm concerned.

Sooner the National Golf Unions get a centralised databse system the better!

I niavely thought that with Handicap certificates being changed in recent years to show your record of play that this wouldn't be an issue. Its still just as bad.

I've seen the results of pro-ams where there has been a hookey handicap in the team, I've played in an open with a 16 handicapper who was nearer 6 than 16.

Rant over !

I can never get my heads round cheats in this game, aint the aim of the game is to get your handicap as low as possible.

I did lose in a little social 9 holes to a 22 handicapper who shot 39 out to my 37 and i off 8.

I really wanna get my handicap as low as possible and let my ability win the comps like everyone on here we wanna get better

I'm with dcb here. I haven't been in golf 5 minutes, some of you guys have worked damned hard for your handicaps over years, faking handicaps for any reason (even if just to play a course) is plain wrong.

I used to be "secretary" of the South East region of the RMI (Retail Motor Industry) golf society and as well as our regional events we held an big annual event called the "Presidents Cup" which was usually held at a well known course.

One year we played at The Forest of Arden and a really nice guy I had met at Moor Allerton the year before asked if he could be put in my fourball, together with a friend of his. I didn't mind, as I say he was a nice guy and we'd had a laugh together the previous year.

Anyway, he arrived and introduced his friend. I can't remember what the guys name was now just remember his first name was "Gordon" but he was a professional footballer playing for Sheffield Wednesday. His handicap was the same as mine (12)...

To say this guy was an out and out "bandit" was a serious understatement. Jeez, on my day I'm not a bad driver of the ball but this bloke was as straight as an arrow and doing me by about 50 yards on every single hole. When he played his second shots, you didn't watch for the ball, you didn't look at (or around) the green. You just had to watch the flagstick. Every single shot he hit peppered the pin, and either stopped dead or spun back. The guy was without a doubt one of the best golfers I had ever played with, and I've played with quite few one and two handicappers.

He must have had about 6 birdies and very nearly had a hole in one, with the ball almost resting against the stick...

The guy cleaned up. He won the Presidents Cup with about 46 points and I think we were playing off 3/4 handicap!

He was the biggest con artist I have ever had the misfortune to play with. I hate "bandits" with a passion, and the following year his handicap had been cut to 5. I think he still came second but he never attended another meeting after that.
