Well I have a week off work and I was going to venture to my old club Durham city tomorrow and I noticed on the website that it said there was pegging up on all fairways.

I've never come across this term before and I'm a little puzzled by what it means. My first thought was that 'peg' might refer to a tee but i'm not certain.

So has anyone heard of this before and can you enlighten me to its meaning?

How does it differ from prefered lie?

Thanks

I remember having to tee up on the wet fairways at my old club many moons ago. It gave us a game where I think the course would have been closed and it was interesting being able to hit a driver for the second shot on par 5's

Your are right it means you can tee it up on the fairway, its a way of protecting to fairways during winter. How does it differ, well it means you can use any club for your second shot even driver.

I remember Longniddry tried this many years ago to try and protect the fairways during winter. What happened though, was when players were close to the green, they pushed their tees in so far that they still took divots. The idea was soon dropped.

You might be able to score in the 20's if you give it a go !

Bloody cheating.
Highwoods had a club competition once where they played under winter rules....and you could "place" if you landed in the rough. My mate won it with a net 62. Net 62!!! He didn't have a net 73 in him usually
Load of cobblers

Well in that case I'll give Durham a miss if I have to tee up all the time.

My current club has far less to spend on greenkeeping and we still have prefered lies. If it gets worse they make you use mats but its not at that state yet.

I played in a roll up at North Shore once with the group my mate's Dad was a part of once.

There were 4 or 5 holes there where you were asked to tee up on the fairway, but not to take advantage of it by using driver.
Needless to say I saw more than 1 whose discarded headcover while they obscured the view to themselves was very large indeed.

dont know about anyone else but I still take a divot when using a Tee.

If I turned up at a course saying peg it up on fairways I wouldnt be playing, likewise for winter greens and/or tees.

Well indeed, I tend to tee it so low it would make no difference anyway. Frankly, mats and tees on fairways would put me off playing, I'm glad we don't get any of that nonsense down here.

To be honest if we were pegging it up or hitting off mats I'd rather got to the range, work on my swing or spend time chipping and putting. It isn't golf.

I don't mind teeing it up on the fairway... I just push the tee right into the ground anyway and just hit my normal shot. I try as best I can to duplicate the lie I originally had. If you don't tee it up (or appear to) some jumped up fart will probably have a moan.

Is it that you can peg (tee) it up on the fairway or you must? If the latter, is there a ruling on how far away from the green you need to be? Otherwise what if you are sitting on the fairway just off the green?
