Hi all,

I’ve got to pop to Rotherham on Thursday for work and Mrs socks has suggested she tags along and we do a stay over. It looks like it’s sits close to the Peak District, so she’s had a great idea of a bot of walking, B&b etc.

Any hotel recommendations, locations to avoid etc would be welcomed

We stayed at the “station house” in Thorpe. It is the old station on the tissington trail. Obviously it is as flat as a pancake re walks.
It is also on the doorstep of Dovedale. We did a circular walk of Dovedale But it nearly killed us doing the last mile or so walking up the last 2 hills back to Thorpe. The walk from Dovedale to Milldale and back the way you came is nice. So park up in the car park. there’s no pub in Thorpe so we drove to a nice pub in Fenny Bentley. 5 minutes away.

It's actually pronounced Rovram ?
Can't help with accommodation as I would just drive there and back when I lived down that way, if you drive through Sheffield towards Ladybower Reservoir there's Hathersage, Eyam and others, it's beautiful around there and that's where I'd be looking at staying if I was you.

This all day long , i work in Rotherham and would not stay there when you are so close to places like Castleton,Hathersage and Eyam , lovely places with plenty of scenic walks.

Agree on the various edges for walking.

Matlock is great as is Matlock bath, with Cromford just around the corner as well.

A lovely walk up to the black rocks above Cromford is very scenic.

My first response, forget it. To far to travel. From there you have a choice. From Rotherham you could head towards ladybower res, from there, Head towards Castleton which would be a nice village to spend the night in. It is overlooked by Mam Tor. If your going for a walk. Drive up Winnats pass park at the base of Mam Tor and have a walk up there. The views overlooking Castletown and Hope valley/ Edale are excellent.
If your not walking from Castleton, head towards Eyam which is the Black Death village. From there. Drop down to Monsal head. There’s a pub car park where you can see the views . From there drop down through Ashford in the water ( lovely village ) and head towards Bakewell. Very touristy but a nice base for the night for food and pubs. Take bread to feed the trout.

Depends what you like, and how strenuous you want it?
If you like valleys, then i can recommend Dovedale, Lathkil Dale or Chee Dale. If you like the wide open views, then Stanage Edge (a there & back walk), the round of Burbage Edge/Higger Tor, or my favourite, the round of White Edge/Froggat Edge/Curbar Edge. If you want the high ground then go up & down Kinder Scout. Or Mam Tor (which is the hill that the "Channel 4 Logo" walks up on some C4 trailers). Of the former railway lines, the Monsal Trail is much better than the Tissington Trail - the latter is just boring for the most part whereas the Monsal trail gets decent views over the river Wye.

I'd stay in either Bakewell or Hathersage.

When staying at Thorpe last weekend. The B and B owner said there's talk of opening the monsal route to railways again ?

There's definitely talk of it in some quarters and I can see why. But there's definitely a strong opposition to it also. (and I can also see why on that). Overall, I think money will price it out.

That’s what the B and B host said, mentioned something about a quarry and Hs2 being involved.
