anyone use or have used any free programs that they can recommend to clean up/speed up/optimise their comp.

Ccleaner is spot on. Steer away from so called registry optimisers etc though.

Also go to www.malwarebytes.org and download the free program ( avoid the trial version)
This will clean up and viruses, bugs and rubbish programs

Also how old is the PC , what operating system, what CPU and how much RAM

( click start, Right click "Computer" , click properties)

After my earlier post the OP send his machine specs which were a 2.8 Pentium 4, CPU with 512 Mb RAM running XP

Suggested downloading the Crucial scanner and chucking an extra 1Gb of RAM in there either side by side to a 512 Mb chip, or in place of a 256 chip

You could clean that up all you want, but without a decent amount of RAM you are piddling in the wind.
and before some smart alec says "stick 4Gb of RAM in it" there is almost certainly a 2Gb ceiling on the RAM on that motherboard and as its 32 bit cannot see more than 3.25 GB in any case.
