My laptop screen keeps freezing every so often , cursor can still moves but nothing happens when i click for up to 10 seconds. i'm using wireless connection which i've reset but makes no difference. Any help for this old numpty would be appreciated, thanks.

need a tad more detail William, is it T'interweb that's freezing or the laptop when running programmes?

CMAC ,Even on the forum pages the screen is freezing /jamming, sometimes it ok like just now other times it just jams and i cant even move page up or down or close down. How can i tell if its my laptop, wireless or internet server at fault. I'm not great with I.T.

Does the hole PC freeze ? Can you alt+tab between running programs?

When was the last time you rebooted it? Reboot and see how it goes.. fixes such problems 90% of the time..

Lets start with the basics

How old is it, what operating system, what CPU and how much RAM

If you hit Start, then left click Computer/My Computer and Right click "Properties"
a box comes up which should tell you most of that.

sounds like an overheat issue to me. Is the laptop being used on a hard surface like a table (which helps airflow ) or is on a duvet which is soft and may cover the vent holes.

Ah! i do sit it on my lap and just noticed it does block the vent. But just incase heres the details -windows 7 home premium 2009 Samsung 64bit rating 3.3, 2.00gb celeron.
Maybe like toothache disappearing when you go to the dentist, but its been ok while posting. I'll keep the vent clear and let you guys know the results. Thanks very much lads, IF YOU NEED ANY ADVICE ABOUT BEING OLD GIVE ME A CALL.

Has it happened over the last few days while it's been warm outside,
Just another clue that could point to an overheat.

What can happen is the heat sink inside the vent can get clogged with dust. Also if it has got too hot the thermal paste between the CPU and the copper rod that leads to the heat sink , can dry up and flake.

Basically the laptop needs taking to bits, a good clean up, new thermal paste and it will be as good as the Celeron CPU will allow

Is the fan excessively noisy or busier than usual

Phil... got a Dell XPS 13, about 3-4 yrs old. I must say it is probably one of the noisest and hottest laptop I have ever seen. Just cant figure out why the fan kicks in? I think they even did a firmware update to make it less noise, but it wont die down. It does not start as soon as u boot it, but will kick in after some random interval, then die and then come back after some time.

Running W7, 4GB ram, i5 (if I remember right)
