Today was the first round of our club championship and we teed off in perfect conditions with the sun shining and the course in perfect condition for it.
I teed off in the last group with Alan from the day before. Now I like the guy but it's a bit of an emotional roller coaster ride playing with him. I had already decided to play a conservative game with the driver staying in the bag unless I felt the need to push a little on the back nine and then it would only be in one or two holes. I had also decided to use the shots I had rather than going for everything.
Bogeyed the first three holes then got my first par on the 4th to be one under handicap. Bogeys on the next and another par had me at 2 under with bogey par bogey bringing me in nicely 3 under handicap for 9 holes.
The front nine scores were on the board as we started the back nine and I was sitting one back from the leader.
As I like the back nine I knew I could post a good score if I kept to the game plan and started the back nine par, par, par, bogey. When my drive on the 14th slid into the rough but in a good position and sitting up nicely I played a 3/4 55 wedge to run it down towards the green. Instead I got a complete flier that ended up in the pond behind the green. Taking my penalty drop from the other side of the pond I hit it long to be safe then a chip and a couple of putts walked off with a 7.
with the shots I had already made up I just wanting to steady the ship played short of the next green so chipped on and 2 putts for a bogey. The short par 4 then gave me an opportunity to get a shot back which I did with a good par.
Having 2 shots on the next I played a 4 iron off the tee followed by a good 5 wood to come up just short of the green and a couple of putts kept things going in the right direction.
A par on the last saw me come in with a PB +13 for a 6 under HC score and a 2 shot lead for the final round next Sunday.
The driver never came out and I played steady golf for all 18 holes even with Alan being up and down like a yo-yo which I normally let get to me. I know what I can do now and hope to play as well next week but for now I'm a very happy chappy!

Well played Andy!

Great round and a great time to produce it.
Excellent mental strength, sticking so rigidly to your game plan, good luck for next week!

Well done on the round.

But are you really 'leading the club championship'?

Or simply 'best nett'!

The guy truly leading the club championship is the guy with the lowest gross score imo!

Only division A players (10 & under) can enter our club champs, we are wanting this to be opened up for the "club" as closing the course on a Saturday next week for so few, currently 24 players, is ridiculous.

Its currently 36 holes in a single day but that then could be changed to over 2 days with a cut. That way we would have another qualifier, a nett winner and the club championship would go to the lowest gross. Also, the club would see much more revenue over the 2 days as next Saturday the majority of the membership are now playing elsewhere which is financial suicide!

Well done on your round

If it was only open to 10 and under HCs then there wouldn't be anyone playing in it at all.
The best handicap at our place is 13 and he's on holiday.

Really???
Well with a score of 6 under you can't be far of best net and best gross. Good shooting Andy.
I dare you. PM Bomber and invite him down for a weekend of proper golf with us mere mortals. ;)

Yes really! We are only a small club with the majority of members being seniors and ladies. It's thought of as too short by many but it's not an easy course by any means.

Are you down this way soon then?

Wasn't it a "Silly bloody game" only yesterday???? :mmm: :whoo:

Well played.

It's still a bloody silly game. Alan hit several worm burners with most of them ending up a lot better than they deserved to be.
One that really stands out was on the 8th. Having hit a fairly good tee shot he duffed his second into the rough about 50 yards short of the green, with wedge in hand he thins it about 4 inches off the ground and it just caught the rough to slow it down or it would have been OOB out the back of the green.
I hit the green in 2 from a fairway bunker and got the par whereas Alan walked off with a 6.

Might be down Padstein at the end of August, nothing final yet though.
Your course sounds a lot like mine, which is also a tight 9 holer. I enjoy it, i like a course that needs a bit of thinking about, instead of crash bang wallop of every tee.
I wasn't having a go Andy, i think its great mate. No raving ego's, it must be bliss. :D

Sorry didn't mean for it to sound like that lol.
Apart from a couple of the ladies thinking it's their personal course we have a great bunch of members there. It's got a really relaxed atmosphere and only the members have a strict dress code on the course.
Love that you reference Padstow as Padstein, you've obviously been down before!
If your getting down mate let me know and we'll sort out a day for a knock.

Well round 2 didn't go to plan. Greens are burnt out in places and lush green in others, course is rock solid and it was oppressively hot when we started at 1PM to the point I even used my brolly to try to keep cool.
I hit the ball well from the tee but the short game was a bit of a lottery when the ball got to the green as was the putting. I didn't get to grips with the green as all which cost me the win by one stroke in the end.
Had a great day with a great opponent but 4 1/2 hours in that heat really took it toll on my game. Oh well I got a nice HC cut to 17.7 and know what I have to do next year.
