Faldo had always known that McGinley playing his way into the team was his number one priority, The fact that he has announced his withdrawal now, after Faldo hadn't picked him for the Seve Trophy is sour grapes.

As for his replacement . . . .
Darren Clarke?? It may be his only chance to be involved, But for me it has to be Langer.

McGinley hasn't really played consistently well for a while now. I don't think he has the game to play himself into contention at the moment, which is a pity because we will have some new young blood in the next team and we will need older more experienced team members to help them adjust.

I think it has been a 'toys out the pram' moment from McGinley this week but Faldo appears to have left the door open for him if I heard his comments correctly on the TV today.

As for a replacement, what about Sandy Lyle again, he seemed to do a good job last time and he does have considerable experience in America.

Sandy Lyle would be a good shout normally, but given the Lyle/Faldo relationship in the past I don't think it's a go-er!

McGinley is off the pace, surely? I hope he doesn't regret the decision.

It'll be interesting to see what they do with Luke Donald....or does it not matter if you play more on the US tour??

Isn't the vice captain usually the next?
Could it be that McGinley sees that position as inferring that he's over the hill?
The choice should really be Monty but I don't think he's captain material.
How about jiminez, at least he'd bring some colour - and an interpreter.

Why do they even need a vice captain, it's hardly complicated. Faldo has earned his place in golf history, McGinley is just an also ran, Faldo doesn't need him or any vice-captain.
12 players, what do you do other than pair them up according to who's pals with who then say soemthing like...."Erm right lads, try and win!". What else is there??
Vice-captains zipping about in a golf cart with a walkie-talkie trying to look important...SAD.
They make such a song and dance about this event i just don't understand it.

Birdieman - you're forgetting the crucial role played by Peter Baker at last year's RC. It was Baker's job to ensure Woosie stayed sober (at least through the morning) so that he could deliver his rousing speeches.

Ahh... that brings me back. Who could forget when Woosie claimed on the Sunday afternoon that - "this is the greatest day in history."

The days the two World War's were relegated to second and third - well said Woosie.

Good point well put Chipin, maybe instead of Vice-Captain they should call the position 'Sobriety Secretary'?
I didn't realise when they say Vice, they mean those kind of vices!
What will the new 'Vice' Captain need to keep Faldo away from? - doesn't he have a thing for US college girls?

The vice captain will be in charge of parking Faldo's ferrari in a suitable spot - preferably in some kind of underground layer where angry teenage girls can't smash it up with 5-irons

Aren't there more than one vice captain anyway? What do they do this far before the Cup that they have to be appointed now? Isn't their role mainly about liaison on the days of play? I remember reading Mark James book about the Ryder Cup that he stationed one of his vice captains on a par 3 to tell those coming onto the tee what club the previous players on that hole had used for the tee shot? Is that useful??

See Sam Torrance was quoted in yesterday's Sunday Telegraph saying:

"I thought it was absolutely horrific of Faldo to ask Olazabal and McGinley to be vice-captains. It was a real mistake in my mind. The vice captains can't do anything, unless you have something you specifically want them to do. And I can't think of anything they need to be doing nine months before an event.

"They should come in with six weeks to go, and talk to the players, look after them if need be. But to ask two current players — to me that is just an insult."

"And now McGinley's pulled out, which I think is great. He now has the chance to get his head down, and get on with his game."

"Absolutely horrific"?! A misjudgement, yes, a mistake, maybe...but absolutely horrific?? Get a grip Sam...it wasn't a bloodbath!

Agree with Muttlee on Sam T generally. His commentating can be annoying particularly his overuse of the word 'magnificent' when describing just about any better than average shot from a pro.
Woods chip on 16 at 2005 masters was magnificent for example but reserve the word Sam for something truly magnificent like that.
