Just weeks ago, when golf became an Olympic sport for 2016, we heard a parade of top American golfers (including Tiger) saying how much they want to represent their country.
Those patriotic words ring pretty hollow, though, in light of what can be described only as an embarrassingly weak American team at this week's World Cup - Nick Watney (31st in the world) and John Merrick (139).

Is this the best America could do for golf's annual Olympic-like extravaganza? Merrick has never even won a Tour event, while Watney has a grand total of two victories.

For a nation who like to sing and dance about how great it is to represent the 'good ol U S Of A' this is a total joke!!

C'mon now dodger, the 'top' players are all tired after a hard season chasing the $$$'s on the PGA Tour. They need a bit of a holiday to recover from the arduous shedule they have had.

Might it be something about travelling abroad that has stopped them ? or maybe it's the lack of 'real'appearance money., or maybe a lot of them don't have passports ?

;) ;) ;)

Some of the other teams ?

Sergio Garcia and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano

Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson

Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher

Martin Kaymer and Alex Cejka

And of course

Zhang Lianwen and Liang Wenchong

Are a few names you'll probably recognise :)

A number of years ago, the US used to put up good teams. Remember Davis Love and Freddy Couples playing for a number of years?

Now, I think the selection process picks one player and that player gets to select the other for his country. So John Merrick was chosen by Watney. For most teams, one guy would choose a drinking buddy. In the case of the US, it is probably they probably go to the same church.

There is also a level of arrogance. They think they can put up two choppers and still win.

As for Tiger and Phil it is OK that they snub this event but what about Kenny Perry, Jim Furyk and Steve Stricker. Any combination of these would make a team tough to beat and they all are passport holders !

I agree with DCB. If you can't get the yanks to turn out for comps in other countries/continents in the middle of the season, then there is absolutely no chance of them turning out at the end of November. However, if the final of the Fedex Cup had been held in China, I'd put a few quid on some of the leading Americans turning up for that. For all that they say about playing for their country, money speaks louder.
