Here's the question, how many pars would you expext an 18 handicap golfer to get per round?

And along the same lines how many pars per round for a 28 handicap and a 10 handicap, is there a science to it or just pot luck?

I play off 19 and had 4 pars during my round on Sunday. It was a mixed bag and I only managed 30 stableford points - but that was not due to too few pars, but too many blobs!

I have no idea how this compares, I imagine most people of my ability get more pars, but my course has 8 dog leg holes (7 par fours, 1 par 5) so on the 7 par fours, it's essential to get a good tee shot away in order to hit GIR.

I dont think there will ever be a direct correlation to this.

I played at the weekend and got 8 straight pars! Think this was the longest run I've had I wont do that every week.

Some days are better than others.

I don't know what your handicap is Jezster, I'd guess it's lower (maybe considerably) than mine, but you've reminded me of a round I once had.

It was at North Foreland in Kent, from the first I went birdie, par, par, par, par, bogey, to be level par after 6 holes. Played the next 12 holes in 28 over par! Haha! I was hitting the ball quite nicely, but kept losing balls in the long grass off the fairway and behind the greens - it was the middle of summer and super hard fast fairways, very difficult to keep the ball on the short stuff.

Since October, I've had between 7-12 pars a round according to my stats. If you call that 9 as an average, I then add probably 7 bogeys or worse and 2 birdies which have given me scores of 71-82 during this time.

The 71 had 9 pars, 5 bogeys and 4 birdies. The 82 had 8 pars, 5 bogeys, 1 birdie and 4 doubles. Seems I'm always getting the pars in, it's just what happens on the other 9/10 which decide my fate!

I would expect an 18 handicapper to average 3 pars a round. Adding to that maybe 10 bogeys and 5 'others'. But that's purely giving it 5 minutes thought at my desk ...

Looking back through my scores, I average 4 or 5 pars per round when I'm scoring in the buffer, I usually also have 3 or 4 even on a relatively poor day, but it's the doubles and blobs that push up my scores on the bad days.

Really? i would have expected a few more from your handicap jim. I really need to stop the stupid mistakes and stupid shots, i honestly think i could play to a decent handicap, i reckon i would have about 8 pars per round too, but my downfall is a few doubles, the odd treble or worse, expect a birdie per round too.

Really depends on the type of player!
Easiest to use Stableford to demonstrate.
For a course where SSS=Par, The Steady Eddie will pick up 2 points on loads of holes, a few 1-pointers and balancing 3-pointers.
The Wild Willie will score relatively few 2 pointers, several blobs and balancing 3+ pointers!

And that's pretty much irrespective of handicap - though lower handicaps tend to, or at least seem to, be more Steady Eddie types - if from all over the course!

Just played my first round of the year on Saturday on a public 18 holer and shot 38 points off 18.0 with 7 pars and 3 blobs. A lot of the holes were 30 yards shorter with temporary tees but there was no roll at all.

I think that's my second best points scoring round ever and I really putted like a drain so I'm very optimistic about the coming season.

It was only my third round since buying game improvement irons and joining a new club so I don't know if it was plain enthusiasm responsible for it but I also ditched the driver bar 2 holes which must have helped as I the only par 4/5 fairway I missed was the last when I was told what score I was on.

Will report back after the next round to see if it was a bit of a fluke but I hope not I really felt in control bar the putting which is a new and pleasant feeling. I am hoping that 18 goes down considerably this year I've never played regularly enough before.

I have been recording my scores since just after the start of the year and am averaging 6 par and a birdie per 18 holes. Granted there have been some shortened holes and temporary greens though. On the down side I am averaging 3 double bogeys or worse..

Jim Bob....that's impressive scoring from someone off 5.5.

Would seem about right. I was going to hazard a guess at four - but that would be for someone mostly playing to +18 gross, in which case, they'd more likely be off 15 ish. Most people don't play to their handicap the majority of the time so would think an 18 'capper playing to handicap or buffer would be around 4-5, but an average of all rounds might be closer to 3.

I know, the nice thing is that the reason I've improved over the last year is that I've turned those doubles into bogeys. I've always had a good level of birdies but they've often been cancelled out by doubles. Since October in those rounds counted above, I've had 15 birdies in 7 rounds with only one birdie-less round. However, I've also had 13 doubles or worse.

In 7 rounds over the same time period last year I had 12 birdies but 25 doubles ...

Next stop, turning more of those bogeys into pars ...

today i had 9 pars, 7 bogeys and two double bogeys, last week i managed 8 holes at level par before the wheels felll off 6 pars 1 birdie 1 bogey.

would be good to see how that stacks against others

Couldn't agree more.
I'm a Steady-Eddie, a Pargrinder.
Not unusual for me to hit double figures on the par front if I'm playing to handicap. Maybe lob in a birdie or two - I'm not a prolific Birdiemeister! - a few bogeys and maybe a double and there's my score.....

No re-read required, he said he averages 9 par's per round, i said i would have thought more as an average. I would expect 12 as an average, throw a a birdie, 4 bogeys and a double and there is your 5 handicap

Playing off 18 I have had a look at my HDID stats and I average 5 pars or better per round with 7 pars or better in two rounds.

I think us high handicappers need to learn how not to compound our mistakes.....

I played today (well kind of didn't hit it very well, was very wet and I didn't cope very well with it) and m scoring kinda sums my game up...
Front 9 :Double bogey, bogey, bogey, double, bogey, bogey, double bogey, bogey, par = out in 46 (+11)
Back 9 : double, bogey, double, par, par, par, par, bogey, bogey = back in 42 (+7)

Total +18...... 3x 3 putts too.......

So 5 pars was my effort...... Wasn't particularly happy with the way I played either.... Maybe getting ahead of myself after the great ball striking on the lovely flat range matts !!!

I didn't keep stats last year but that bold bit just about sums me up. Far too often last year I shot buffer or narrowly missed it with 2 or 3 doubles on my card, I even shot 15 over in one round with a double, two trebles and a quad!

I would guess I'm around 7 on average but can't say for sure. When I play to my h'cap it would be more like 10 or 11 at a guess. I would think an 18 handicapper would be something like 3.

i average 4-5 now now, 4 quite comfortably, but it can be soo much more but i make stupid mistakes when im ona roll, or one of my putts lips out, but i always tripple or wose our 1st hole, tee shot always goes wrong

last round was 5 pars 2 of which were missed birdies, and 7 narrowly missed pars or stupid mistakes
