Does anyone do their local Parkrun?

I took my son down to our local Taunton one this morning, his first one.

They are very well organised and the results system is so quick and easy.

It is done in age bands and he falls in the 10s and under.

Its 5k and ours is off road on a very narrow[2 people wide track] of hard mud with some bark track.

The big downside on this one was that there were 218 runners mostly doing it for fun as apposed to fast or racing and with the narrow track it was nearly impossible to overtake.

We started off way down the field and we were basically jogging until it spread out a bit.

We both did the first lap in 12.30 and then my son did the 2nd lap himself in 10.48 for 50th place.

Next week we will push up and start near the front and will aim for about 22 minutes which will be a good time for an 8 year old.

My wife does the one at Belton House every Saturday. As you say, very well organised and a great way to get fir in a friendly environment

I was at park run this morning. I helped to setup then marshalled as slight niggle with my knee. My best time is 27 minutes 27 seconds, my aim at the moment is sub 28.

22 minutes for 5k is very good!!

Used to do it years ago but injury stopped me coupled with my Sat morning medal. Best time for me was 26.01, desperate to get it down. I've down 33 runs in total and had I kept going if have had my 100 t-shirt before now

Not for me as running bores me to tears, I prefer to cycle to keep fit. Absolutely fantastic concept though, I know quite a few people that have become more health conscious through taking up parkruns.

I'm off for a full english now..........

They are a great concept, not done one for a couple of years though as none local.
Best time was just inside 19 mins, aged 55 , you lot aren't trying hard enough 😮

Would love to, but with the Mrs working Saturdays, it makes it impossible! Awesome concept though and bravo to all of the volunteers!

Following on from my sons first parkrun he completed his 2nd this morning.
It was very cold this morning with one massive shower just before the run but during the run it was rather pleasant but with a slight headwind for the first 1 1/2 km.

We had a plan to run around 22 minutes based on his first run and being held up for a long time, but this time we got nearer the front.

I ran the first lap with him just to get him in position and going at a sensible pace then let him do the 2nd on his own.

I used to be a very good runner but am struggling with poor Achilles and dodgy calves so cant do the whole course yet.

Ryan finished the course in 20 minutes and 36 seconds and still 3 weeks before his 9th birthday.

The categories are all based on a percentage compared to world record times for the age groups with the first age being 10s and under so its hard to fathom slightly being still 8 but he has over a year before he moves up to the 11-14 however he was at 82% this week.

He has been running for a year now at least twice a week and hopefully soon he will join the local running club in Taunton and by the time he gets to the 11-14 he will be down near 19 minutes.

Nearly a year has gone by so this morning we went to the local parkrun to see if Ryan could get under 20 minutes before his 10th birthday.

Having done 20.36 just before his 9th and with the training we have been doing I was confident he could do under 20.

We had worked it out it was 6.26 per mile for 19.59.

He did the first in 6.10 then 6.26 then 6.24 for a finishing time of 19.23 which was way faster than I thought and a new course record for the under 11 age band and with over a year to his 11 birthday I believe another minute is achievable.

Also he has the 2k record of 7.20 so would like to get that comfortably under 7 minutes by his 11th birthday also.

The great thing about his running is he enjoys it which obviously with kids is the main priority.

Well done to him. But he should be made aware that we 'hate' him. In a friendly jealous kind of way.

Think about how fast he can go when he turns 11 and doesn't have to wait for his responsible adult ;-)

Fantastic that, the young fella sounds like he has a bit of running talent

Wish these were around when I was young, all I did was run ages 8-17.

We lived in the country and I had a 3 mile cross country track up and down the wolds. I can't remember my best time as I never really kept any records or timed it.

One my boy is old enough then we will start going to our local one. He isn't even two yet...

Will do mate
I did video it but because I'm old and senile I forgot to press start doh.

I also did a video the other day for his hour run and had the go-pro to far forward and chopped his head off,me and technology don't mix I'm afraid.
Ha Ha, tell him he's got to run holding a selfie stick ;)

parkrun is a great concept and keeps getting more and more popular. There was just one near me at the start of 2015, there are loads now. It got me into running and I did my first 5k just over 2 years ago. I've done 71 now and completed my 5th Marathon last week. I haven't been getting there as much lately as the wife started working Saturday am. I do miss it.

Your son sounds like he has a talent for running and will smash sub 20 soon.
