Coincidently I found a brilliant par 3 nine hole course 10 minutes drive form the Mrs parents, RESULT! Had such a good afternoon today and managed to pick up 2 birdies and 3 pars over nine holes.

Where is it?.....

I have great par 3 near me at Rutland Water. Huge variety of holes needing anything from a pitching wedge to green at the bottom of a long drop to an uphill 3 wood to a green surrounded by bunkers. Takes about an hour to an hour to play 9 holes and is a great way to tune up my game. Played there 3 weeks ago then the following day I parred 2 and birdied 1 of the par 3s on the full course.

I believe tradition suggests that the winner of the par 3 never goes on to win the big tournament.

Last year Mark O'Meara I think?

They should have invited htl....he's the par 3 man....I'd put money on him not breaking the tradition as well. (sorry htl)

f.w.i.w. the par 3 Open used to be held at a course near me, as was/is the blind players open.

I'd enjoy caddying for a blind player. "OK, 160 to the pin, nice easy swing, nothing to go over" (four bunkers and two lakes...I'd prefer not to see them!) How do they do it.....fabulous.....respect due...

I have made a conscious decision that I am going to play my local par 3 at least once a month from now on as a means to a sharper short game. Need something new to excite me about short game practice

It was at the Hampshire golf club (just outside Andover), they also have an open air driving range which plays off grass, so its an ideal practise place and escape from the in laws. They also have a cracking course but my arthritis has been playing up recently so taking it easy with par 3`s and 9 holes.

Realgolferuk, trust me this was a very very good day for me on par 3`s hence the good mood.

Back to the thread what’s this comp all about?

The players in the Masters all take part in a "fun" competition on the par 3 course. I've C+P the info from the website.....

"First played in 1960 and won that year by Sam Snead, the Par 3 Contest has become a Wednesday tradition at the Masters. The Par 3 course was built in 1958 by architect George Cobb and Clifford Roberts. Tournament participants, non-competing past champions, and Honorary Invitees are invited to participate in the Contest. The nine hole course is par 27, 1,060 yards and played over DeSoto Springs Pond and Ike's Pond. In 1987 current hole Nos. 8 and 9 were added over Ike's Pond, eliminating hole Nos. 1 and 2 of the original course from Wednesday competition. "

I have a really poor par 3 near me (sorry minty), mud, floods and rabbit holes last time I was there. I think the longest is 109, the shortest maybe 60.
The next nearest is equally unloved (rarely cared for) though the 'greens' are more interesting as they have a variety of slopes.

Wellllll, not all, Tiger won;t be there as there's no money in it for him.

Good to see the BBC have changed their minds on this, originally they weren't showing it. Really looking forward to this, first time televised toher than the odd highlight clip.
