Over the last few weeks I have thought and tryed about laying up on every par 5. I have played alot of golf over the last few weeks, I was playing our 10th today, par 5, 224yrds to go, I took out a 6 iron just to bang it down about 80yrds short. After I had hit the shot I felt "bored". So it got me thinking, whenever I take my 5wood or whatever I think I could get me to the green there was some excitiment, where as taking the 6 iron was just boring. I know making a safe 5 is better than taking a 6 or a 7, but there was no excitiment in the shot.
It's nearly like laying up at a long par3.
So do you guys go for the great shot of take the safe route and make par?

I am no big hitter but score better on Par 5's as with a driver, a nice 3 wood and a nice full wedge I am on the green most of the time, and then comes the par or bogey.
On the Par 4's I generally mess up the 2nd and 3rd and lead to bogey time.
For sure laying up makes sense but we all suffer the "if this shot comes off"
The Par 3 and Par 5's offer the birdie chance so we risk it.
Human nature

As I can't make the majority of our par 5's with the exception of one if its downwind its about leaving myself the right distance to wedge it close. The excitement comes in the skill required with the 3rd shot and trying to get it close enough to make birdie. I'm afraid I'd rather that than 3 wood off the fairway and risking a big score

Hey, who says we're going to make par after laying up to wedge distance? I think most of us are perfectly capable of ballsing it up from there.

It can be boring not going for the shot, especially if you know you can do it. That's why, if the shot's on, I'll take it on. I was forced to last week. Hooked into the clag off the tee, dropped out but still only able to hack out a few yards. Had 230ish to the green. Pulled out the 3 wood and knocked it on. 2 putts and a bogey(1 point) went on the card. If I'd laid-up, I could still have missed the green or been in 2 putt range. As we were playing Stableford I went for it. But if it had been medal, to be fair, I may not have

Has to be a good reason (shocking risk/reward) for me to lay up at a par 5 if its in reach, i know its about how many but find it hard not to take holes on (and also get lazy hitting lay ups and often hit worse shots)

I tend to go full out all the time, attacking golf is my game and when I try to play safe I usually balls it up.

So if I think I can get there in 2 on a par 5 I give it a go, although im not that big a hitter so the chances to go for it are pretty few and far between.

Some of the big hitters on here would have been going for it with the 6 iron from 224 yards

I would usually try and go for it every time, if there is a chance of getting there I would take it. I would rather hit 3 wood and play from the sand for the 3rd or from wide of the green than lay up and think about missed opportunities. Although 6 iron wedge is sometimes a good shout, it is a route I would rarely take.

Nah, just an easy 7 iron ;)

Depends on the hole and circumstance - I'd rather play the percentages and lay up although I agree, it's boring, also frustrating if you then go and make a hash of the pitch!

We've got 4 par 5's at our course....473mtrs the longest
and 415 the shortest off our medal tee's....
Our shortest is a green below the fairway by about 30 mtrs but its nearly always wind into you...The more iv educated myself on my course management the more i seem to lay up and more often than not get away with a par..
I can reach 2 with a good belt of my 3 wood or 3 hybrid but there's too much trouble around the green for a shot from that distance....

Also our 6th is 459mtrs all uphill to a raised green but there is a whitethorn tree at exactly 105 mtrs so thats my target for my layup...From here im in with one of my wedges and hope that my putters on song :)

Depends on a lot of factors but isn't knocking a wedge stiff from 80 yards more exiciting than bashing a 3 wood pin high, but 25 yards right, into the crud? I know what gets more birdies.

It's nothing like laying up on a long par 3!

Depends on the hole. 5 par 5s at my place. 2 reachable. 2 not. 1 that is reachable but there's trouble down both sides.

Easy :)

If on the very rare occasion i hit a good drive, and can reach a par five in two, i will go for it. Past experience has told me that trying to hit a smooth 6/7 iron lay up will result in a huge hook into the trees. :(

All about risk/reward. If there is little risk I'll go for it every time and also if I can hit a long iron. Otherwise I will play a club that will take all the trouble out of play (usually 6/7/8 iron) and take my chances 50/60 yards with a wedge. We only have 2 par 5's though and one usually not reachable as it's into the prevailing wind so not a major issue on home course.

Par 5 at 415 mtrs. Dunbars got a couple of par fours longer at 420mtrs=460yards and 418mtrs=457yards The longest par 5 is 495 mtrs=541 yards. I'm lucky if I get the long par fours in two, so a lay up is the best I can do on it's 3 par 5s.

still new to the game but always when playing swindles or friendlies :confused i love the excitemnt of the challange and go for it how else can you learn? :D
