Well there were already question marks about golf membership next year and things just got even more challenging.

Having spent the majority of last year trying to unsuccessfully sell our golf club the owner has made a number of cost cutting decisions. Reduced opening times for the bar, no more golf pro or golf shop and our practice area is currently in bad shape with no sign of any improvement. There has been limited investment in the course and a number of our water hazards have errr no water, inexplicable given recent weather.

I've not received a renewal form and am thinking with our current financial challenges (house move) I may take a year away from membership and be a nomad.

What would you do?

Pay and play am afraid. Why do you stay there. Pay and play means other courses. You may find the grass is greener elsewhere.

gone nomad myself this year for different reasons. Already looking like I have saved 2 months money due to the weather, played 2 rounds elsewhere costing 34 quid in total in green fee's :)

You might play somewhere local ish and love it and join there so might well be a win win situation

No brainer, leave! Why give the owner who is clearly not investing anything in the course your business. Spend the money on green fees when you want to play.

Look at other clubs locally. I am sure many will be aware of the situation at your place and may be able to do some kind of deal. Just shop around and see what you can get. If nothing floats your boat, go nomadic until you can find/afford somewhere you like

thanks guys. I don't really want to join the two other courses that are in my price range so think its a year of nomad golf for me and with a huge slice of luck I may be able to join Purdis or Woddbridge next year...

Tiger me man, last year was the first year I joined a club. At fifty yr old there were many reasons for that, finances, kids, work etc etc. anyway I was playing monad for about 18 months and played half a dozen courses around the mansfield area. Some were out of my price range and others were not. Eventually I settled for Norwood park. Certainly not the nearest but for me it had everything. In the 2-3 years I have been going there, you can see a massive difference to the course, driving range, club shop etc etc.

more importantly, I have never seen one member moan about anything re the course. (That must be a first), having played at others it was amazing seeing members moan about everything any anything. If they had brains to think some of them they would moan about the colour of the grass. Go nomad and use it as a period to shop around, furthermore, ask what deals clubs are doin.

Woodbridge is a lovely course.

Have a feeling lots of clubs will be cost cutting in the future, especially if we continue to have such poor weather

Sadly I doubt many of them will consider reducing the cost of joining or coming up with mor flexible memberships but I guess that's a bit of a risk for clubs

If you do rejoin a club it wouldn't be that one in my honest opinion.... It's a slippery slope.
