At our club the committee have decided that in Pairs competitions if there is no one to mark their cards ,the playing pairs are allowed to mark their own cards...this is to ensure that they play in the comp on that day.
Surely that is against rules laid down by the governing golf body...can anyone point me where I may find a ruling against this practice please.

I don't quite agree with that - but I do understand why though. More pairs in the competition. But lets be honest a 4 man team or Texas Scramble teams do mark their own games. So unsure if the rule only applies to singles/strokeplay golf.
But lets me honest golf is a game of integrity and honesty so I would hope it wouldn't matter. There's plenty more people only do their 3 cards a year to keep their 24 handicap and only play open or society golf.

At our club we are allowed to enter one card in the pairs comp without a marker. Given its a pairs competition with placing on the whole course (due to it being wet) it really doesn't both me.

If pairs are going to cheat then they are going to do it anyway. wouldn't worry about it.

The rules state that the committee must appoint markers - there is no prohibition of the sort you are looking good for that I am aware of.

Do you expect an independent person to walk found with every texts scramble team etc etc?

Think it should be discouraged. Don't have a problem with it so long as it's exceptional. In many ways it's to protect the players concerned rather than the field. Can't see anyone actually cheating in this scenario but should that pair come in with 47 points and win by 3 there will always be some who tar them as such. Obviously not fair but it will happen.

In that situation I would be sending out a pair with an unimpeachable reputation - just for that reason.

Then they lose that we'll earned reputation when they come in with 47!

There's no right answer, but as Fylde white says (and I think most agree) it's not ideal and should be avoided if possible. However, where it's deemed necessary the committees wisdom should simply be accepted - the example given to kick of this thread is, to me, an excellent example of the lesser of 2 poor situations.

We need an marker or a F/C to mark our card in pairs comps, but we're allowed mark each others card in medal stroke play comps when playing as a 2 ball.
