Hi All,
My first post! Please be kind.
My timing is all shot and I've started to shank and mis hit my shots after many months of decent golf and getting my handicap down to all time low. I think in an effort to acheive greater distance I'm putting in too much emphasis.
I've just had a lesson from my pro who has diagnosed the problem. My feet were open, my body has tried to compensate and as such my body is getting ahead of the ball way before the club does. In fact the hosel is leading the way on some shots it's so far out!!
I'm back to slowing down, progressing from half swings to three quarters etc to calm my nerves and re-train my timing with an emphasis on trying to move the ball right to left.
I must admit it works but it's hard and slow going. I get bored and try a full swing and whoops another shank.
Are there any other drills people know about. I've read this months Issue and saw a couple Luke Donald uses - the stick through the belt and right foot back.
I need help - fast! If you've ever shanked you'll appreciate my desperation :D

Ouch....not good. Bad luck...

When it's gone (tempo/balance/turn) it's very hard to get it back, especially out on the course.

What I do is go to the range with a big bucket, a few drinks and my "let's get this better, even if not cured tonight" head on. I also leave my woods at home!!!

1) I make a T on the mat to check my alignment.
2) start the practice with a baseball swing warm-up making extra sure that the hub (my body) is controlling the swing, not my hands
3) Swing some 3/4 7 irons clipping the rubber tee, practicing "thumbs up" (Faldo style)
4) put a ball under each foot (toe) and avoid the leaning forward that also contributes to a shank. swing a few 9 irons.
5) start making full swings (without balls under feet!!!) and DELIBERATELY avoid spinning the top half of my body towards the target through impact, (like trying to block it on purpose) I let the body turn as late as possible, then work on a picture-perfect finish.

This fixes me in a session or two, but you'll find some good drills through a Google, I found a load of good stuff. I typed in "collapse through impact" golf.....and found some really helpful stuff.

Success...
I laid out the clubs and hit about 70 odd balls with my 7 iron, as you say thumbs up and an easy swing.

I fatted a few but most were cleanly struck and straight at my target....phew.

Progressed on to a full swing and quickly realised I wasn't really swinging at all, more pulling the club round my body, not the same sensation as the half shots and shanks etc re-appeared :( so...

Recreated the sensaiton of the half shots, easy swings, letting my big muscles do the work, the club fell into a higher slot than before and the result ....yipee.....solid strikes straight down the line....right through the bag.

Taking the thoughts on the course this evening for a few holes. Fingers crossed.

It's amazing how bad you feel when a bad swing fault creeps in and you can't hit a ball. Very depressing..but start hitting solid again and all of a sudden all negative thoughts are lifted and you feel so positive. Golf is good again...I hope

If the dreaded unmentionables comes back try hitting your 7 iron with the ball positioned on left heel. I find it focuses you (and gives you more time) to release the club properly.

good luck !

Managed to keep my swing together in Saturdays comp. Shot a steady 84 (par 72) so not too bad and swing actually swung!

Downside of the round 4 greens 3 putted, 2 fluffed chips and 2 missed 4 footers. Oh well, can't have everything I suppose!
