So I had Les Dennis round yesterday afternoon and we got chatting. Amanda Holden, Pantomimes, putters, you know how it is. Anyway, for old times’ sake, Big Les suggested we conduct a survey to pass the encroaching and inescapable tedium that would mark our Wednesday afternoon. So without further ado….

“We asked one hundred (read 77) GM Forumers (GMFs) as to their putter proclivities. Our survey said”;

· The most popular putter shape is ‘Heel Toe Weighted’ – 32%.
· 48% of GMFs use face balanced putters.
· More GMFs used Milled face putters than inserts 41% vs 37%.
· No GMFs use sight dots on their putters, whilst only 5% putt without an alignment aid of any kind.
· More than half of GMFs, 52%, used a standard 34” putter.
· Counter balancing is in the minority, with only 14% of GMFs adopting this type of putter.
· Not too much to choose between grips; 49% of GMFs use the stock grip, versus 40% who changed grip through preference.
· The majority of GMFs have not been custom fit for their putter – 88%.
· Finally, putter longevity is split. 52% of GMFs have owned their putter for more than a year, with the overall majority of 31% having owned their putter for more than 2 years.

*Thanks all for taking part in this exercise in complete frivolity. No forum members were harmed in the conducting of this survey and the R&A were duly consulted as to any potential breaches of Rule 73b.1.4.2c.

The inevitable conclusion that can be drawn from the data above would suggest that all golfers do indeed use a putter.

Thanks for watching.

...until they smash them over a knee and have to use a wedge for the rest of the round!

Amazing that 4 out of 10 putters get the grip changed becasue we didn't want the one that was on it

If that were true on a larger scale (& its prob not) there's a change required at POS

Out of curiosity how many of those who have been fitted for their putter have had it longer than 2 years?

I have had mine coming up to 3 years at Christmas and it's position in the bag is well and truly safe for at least a few more. To be honest with you I am not one to tinker too much with my set up so I may not be the best person to ask.

I think tsped could produce the stats by doing a cross tabulation on the survey monkey results of the two questions :)

I have to say that if I'm happy with the grip I don't tend to change it as I don't believe it wears out in the same was as on irons and woods. Fortunately mine came with a Winn AVS (my favourite grip).

Ive not had a putter fitting for a long long time now but whenever I buy one I rip off the old grip because they are usually way to thin, cut two or three inches off the shaft so that its only 32 inches long, fill the shaft with sand so that the static weight is much heavier than the "norm" of around 520gms...somewhere between 600 and 650gms and then fit a larger grip... typically a super stroke mid slim. I then bend it to a lie angle of 68 degrees.

Fitted.
