What other sports do you play which you feel help your golf game (or even computer games or whatever!)? Started playing tennis which i dont know if it helps much but the fitness is good.

Hi mate,

I was a very dedicated Cricket player for 15 years (represented my country at european level but thats not saying much beccause Gibraltar isnt a force in european cricket but i have had some experiences and played against players who now represent their country at international level!).

I have felt that it certainly has helped my game, especially my hand eye coordination. One of my strengths of my game is my short game and especially my pitching and chipping around the green. I do have quite a wristy action due to my cricketing background and I know its not the textbook way to play chips and pitches however it does work for me!

Running and cycling for me, I reckon the fitness helps me enjoy the game better but I don't think they improve my golf.
Plenty of porkers are better at the game than me , they may be sweating walking down the 2nd but doesn't seem to hamper their golf.

Not really a sport but yoga has helped with various back and hip issues.

I don't have any back issues yet but I am seriously considering starting Yoga as I have heard good things about it helping.

One of the best and easiest ideas I was given for aiding balance is to do things one legged, ie, brush your teeth or wash the pots standing on one leg. Do that everyday & it'll help your stabilizing muscles.

I'm in the gym 4 days a week weight training, it helps with some extra yards but does often hinder playing golf at all... I train 8-12 reps and to failure so my bodies constantly fubared... The day after legs makes golf almost unbearable.

Yeah ive been doing that. Trying to curl my toes in to get better stability but my left ones seem really weak.

Only the gym for fitness these days. Used to play cricket but not sure it was that much help. Was a bowler (best figures 4-3-1-5, thanks for asking) and trying the equivalent of a cover drive with a four iron doesn't produce the best golfing result.

One of my regular golfing companions is an ex cricketer and hits everything off the back foot as it where. He is not bad, but would be better if he could transfer his weight properly. I also used to play a bit of cricket, but batted left handed and play golf right handed, so no baggage brought forward from cricket. Most hand-eye coordination sports such as tennis or squash seem to help when playing golf, even though you are only hitting a stationary ball.

I'm playing hockey at the moment. Hope the added fitness coupled with a similar hitting action will improve the golf cone spring.

Played hockey for decades ( well two :D )

Was told by a pro that it helped my ball to eye co ordination and shifting the weight to the front foot

I also found that I batted better at cricket because my reactions were faster. Usually started the season like a train and then derailed it with beer and late nights.

I tried some archery a few years back. I felt that helped in relation to getting a feeling of being well balanced and focused before releasing the arrow. Brought home Harvey Pennicks's saying about "taking dead aim".
