I'm off to Troon next week for my daughter to play in the Scottish Ladies amateur stroke play but while i'm up there my son would like to play some golf as well, so i was wondering if anybody could recommend any courses nearby that would be worth visiting.

Depending on your budget - as virtuocity says there are the 3 municipals at Troon which are all decent. I like Lochgreen the best of the 3. You have also got the 2 municipals at Ayr Belleisle approx 15 mins drive from Troon which are also good. All of these won't cost anymore than about £25 a round weekdays.

Of course there is an abundance of Private Clubs nearby who welcome visitors - Prestwick St Nicholas £65 weekday round, Dundonald Links £40 weekday round, Glasgow Gailes £45 weekday round, Irvine Bogside £50 weekday round - all these courses are very good and within 15 mins drive from Troon. Dundonald Links is a real test of golf and at £40 looks a really good option.

However if you want to spend a little more Western Gailes (located less than 10 mins drive from Troon) is in my opinion a standout course always in immaculate condition and a supberb track. £80 weekday round including 2 course lunch is pretty good value.

Whichever course you play i'm sure you will not be disappointed.

Have a good one.

Loads of courses but depends on budget, Green fee voucher could be worth a shout but here's a list:
Dundonald
Western Gailes
Glasgow Gailes
Kilmarnock Barassie
Irvine Bogside
West Kilbride
Troon Seafield (I think)
You could take the boat to Arran?
Further up towards Glasgow on M77:
Eastwood
East Renfrewshire
Whitecraigs
Cathcart
Pollok

Sorry missed out Barassie GC £65 weekday with lunch (April special). Located in the outskirts of Troon - like some of the others mentioned is an Open Champ Qulaifying course so again price with lunch seems very good.

If you go to western Gailes you can't beat the cheese on toast with bacon or the mince on toast with poached eggs.
Dundonald for £40 and Glasgow Gailes at £45 are very good deals. Glasgow Gailes is a quality course with very few holes going in the same direction.

Great part of the golfing world, can't go wrong with any of the recommendations above. Loch Green is a good bet because of its proximity, the Darley is a good challenge
